Re: Norton AV and Zone Alarm...can they co-exist?

DaveA...a couple of "dumb" questions...

1. Does ZA ask you to give Generic Host Services server privileges, and do you allow this?

2. When NAV checks incoming mail, do you "see" this happening (e.g. yellow and grey box in lower right corner of screen), however briefly? (I do "see" NAV checking the outgoing mail.) I recently switched from dial-up to ADSL and can't remember whether in the old version one sees the incoming mail being checked.

Thanks.

1) Yes, and YES the system needs to have this access.

2) No, only on the out going, the display can be turned off, I like seeing that I and protecting the one I am sending to. Also with the display on one will see when ANY program is trying to send email. Make sure that you have "Auto Protect" turned on in the Email section of the options.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Norton AV and Zone Alarm...can they co-exist?

I'm using NAV 2003 included with N. SystemWrorks.
Zone Alarm Pro 4.5.594 ( had to uninstall v 5.0 ) causing awful problems with Norton's. I have disabled ZAlarms E-mail scan..
E-mail's being scanned both in & outbound. by NAV E-mail scan.
Auto Live Update works perfectly.

On Win98SE, using NAV 2001, Liveupdate 1.80, and ZA 5.0.590.043, they are cooperating perfectly

Duchess843, which OS are you running...Windows XP? Did you go back to the earlier version of ZA because of the problems with NAV? Did the earlier version cause fewer problems? How can I tell whether NAV is scanning incoming E-mail?

hi Dave,

a browser should not normally need server acces. i use firefox now, but when i used internet explorer it didn't need server access either. have to admit though that i never used the windows update site (for which you may need server access), and download every patch through the technical security bulletins manually. windows messenger can be completely uninstalled, i notice you do not like it .

Re: Norton AV and Zone Alarm...can they co-exist?

Just call me Duchess or if you prefer Gloria.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.
Yes, I reverted to an earlier version of ZA Pro because it wasn't scanning my mail, in or out bound and wasn't allowing Norton's to do it either. That left me where I did not care to be, naked and unprotected.
Zone Alarm Pro with Web Filtering seldom caused problems and when it did, it was minor and easily corrected.
The only way I could tell that Norton's was scanning inbound mail was when it stopped mail from entering my e-mail in-box. because of a probable virus (which it wasn't by the way).

Re: Norton AV and Zone Alarm...can they co-exist?

Yeah, Yeah, I know!!!!!
This FORMER advocate of ZA has finally thrown in the towel and bailed out. The last straw was when Check Point bought out Zone Labs and threw ZA down the john. They refined it so much that it just didn't work right anymore. A real shame. But then you were telling us that all along, huh?
Sygate seems to work OK, I just have to get used to the new, not as fancy GUI.

Edited to add: The next one on my list is Nero, who claims that I have a hot copy of it even though I bought it from them direct.

Now that you have seen the light...I will not belabor the point. Too much. What I was telling you all along was that it was just a matter of time...

Bob (Viking 33),

belated thanks for your advice, it was indeed an NAV problem (not a Zone Alarm problem), simply downloading current version of LiveUpdate (2.0) from Symantec's site fixed the problem.
