direct formatting effects the entire document (XP)

I've noticed, just recently, that when I apply direct formatting to a word or paragraph, the ENTIRE document changes. Then I press Control+Z and the entire document will "undo", but my original intent will be accomplished. This happened once before and asI recall I'd accidently "clicked" a box that should not have been. But I've slept since then and can't remember???

Select Format | Styles and Formatting...
Right click a style listed in the task pane and click Modify...
Clear the "Automatically update" check box, then click OK.
    Repeat for the other styles.

If this happens in all new documents, open Normal.dot and repeat there, then save Normal.dot.
