Screen Flicker (Was Icons in Taskbar) (Win XP SR-1)

Now that the icon issue (<post#=Icons in Taskbar,388358>post Icons in Taskbar,388358</post#>) is resolved, I still need to address the screen flicker that I am getting. Part of the original post discussed screen resolution (<post#=388428>post 388428</post#>) possibly being the cause. As I said in the post, I originally upped it to 75, then 85 refresh rate. At both settings I still got intermittent flicker. This weekend I changed it to the next available setting of 110 and am still getting the flicker. Flicker probably isn't the correct term since the screen goes absolutely blank for a good 5 seconds (seems much longer). This is not a new issue, meaning it was doing it before the clean install. In fact it has done it ever since I went to XP. The monitor is 3 years old. And I am using the latest driver from NVIDIA (56.72).

So, now I am thinking is it the monitor? Could it be just old enough not to like XP? When I upgraded to XP the Win Upgrade check site said all was well. Or could it be the graphics card? Or? Ideas?

TIA

First, check that you have hidden unusable modes.
Second, is the monitor recognised as working properly?
Third, can you try the monitor on another pc? - if so, does it appear to function OK?

From your description of the blanking, it sounds more like a component (hardware) failure in the monitor itself. Does it start blanking immediately, or after it has been on for a while?

And, on the subject of the hardware, have you checked to make sure the monitor cable at either end hasn't come "ever so slightly" loose? You might want to shutdown and even take a look to see if the video card is seated tightly.

The display might be dying...do you hear a clicking noise when the screen goes blank?

Sherry.
------------------------------------------
the screen goes absolutely blank for a good 5 seconds (seems much longer).
------------------------------------------
Now that is something different than just screen resolution settings ( although 110 is a bit high )
As other posters have said, it now looks like a monitor or graphics card problem, with the better odds on the monitor being the culprit.

Have you checked the NVidia settings? Right click the desktop, click properties>settings>advanced>NVidia GeForce xxx, paying attention to Display Timing ( automatic ) and Performance and Quality settings?

I forgot to look at other posts, but is your monitor being recognized properly in Device Manager?

bigaldoc and All,
When I checked the monitor cable it felt a little loose though hard to really tell because it is very hard to reach. Then I checked the other end and it was very loose. There was "play" in the slot - I could actually move it from side to side. After tightening all the screws and making sure the card was seated properly, I put it back together and checked all the other things mentioned in this thread. Those were all OK. I used the PC for an hour last night without a single "black out". And none so far tonight either [crosses fingers].

Thanks everyone.

Loose cables make monitors (and other components) unstable.

I think you've found your culprit. I'd let the PC run for a couple hours (put a screensaver on & set the Display Properties so that the monitor stays on) and if the problem doesn't reoccure, I'd check that one off the list of troubles too.

Hmmm. I was all ready to agree with you until the screen went blank last night. So it has been fine since I fixed it last week and it only did it once last night and nothing yet today. However I haven't been using the computer that much today. It could be the monitor but I would hope it would last longer than 3 years. Must be time for a new computer.

Sherry,
Suggest before you spend money on anything, un-install the Video card driver through Control Panel, Add Remove programs and then use a Utility such as
nV Cleaner from 3D Chipset (it's free). Then a fresh installation of the Video driver.
I had the exact same problem and the final resolution was this simple thing.
I did not !! use the latest and greatest Nvidia driver version as that has led to problems on my 2 yr. old machine in the past. HTH

Gerhard,
Which Video driver did you use when you reinstalled it? Did you let Windows find it or point to a file you already had (since you say you didn't use the Nvidia driver)?

I used Nvidia driver version 41.09 (which I had saved on CD as part of a Setup Driver package for this PC).
