SP2 - don't all rush in at once! (XP SP1)

There's some speculation by Symantec that a few of their things might go wrong when SP2 gets installed, so it might be well worth waiting for Woody's "OK"!

John

Corrected later... Why did I put RC2 (Release Candidate) when I mean Service Pack?

Becky - where were you??!!

John,
You should definitely NOT install SP-2 RC2 on a production machine. You should be prepared for a clean re-install at any time with pre-release software. I have a feeling that even with the "OK" from on high that there will still be many problems with SP-2 ("gold"). MS has published several documents on the changes and what to prepare for. I suspect that the MS newsgroups, this lounge and most other thrid party support sites will be quite busy after SP-2 is released.

Joe,

Just what IS the word on SP2 these days?
Are they just pushing the release date out more and more or is there some sort of date planned in the future?

Windows XP Service Pack 2: Install With Care reports that:

Symantec software functioned seamlessly with SP2 but
3 out of 5 test machines blue-screened and had to have both SP1 and SP2 removed before they would boot[/list]It looks like it may be a very hot summer out in Redmond if they're going to make that August release date.

John,
Well I finally took the plunge at work. Installed XP SP-2 RC2 on one test machine. We needed to test software that we sell plus internal applications plus the Office 2K. So far so good. Installed without a hitch. Just spending a little time with the firewall figuring out ports and applications which need clearance. No BSODs yet. No broken applications found. Need to test on a machine that has Office XP next (don't have Office 2003 anywhere). Hope all goes as well when the official release hits the streets.

Re: SP2 - don't all rush in at once! (XP SP1)

I just did an XP reinstall on a VIA chipset Athlon 1600 with a Matorx G450 and Microsoft mouse & keyboard and 3Com NIC (all pretyy standard stuff).

No problems to report after a couple of weeks, using the XP firewall (but behind the corporate network's firewall)

Office 2003
Outlook 2003 on Exchange 2003 server
Symantec Corp Ed. 9.0
Novell client 4.9
Ecco Pro (We keep expecting a windows update to kill this, but it keeps chugging along. Truely a Prince among Apps).
Firefox & Thunderbird

I'm sure I've had more running, but I've been lax in testing.

Hope this Helps

Hi Jim,

I was trying to report about experiences with XP SP-2 RC2. Is that what you installed? This huge update is expected to be RTM early August with a web release mid-August (based on last reports).

Yep, I'm using RC2. I can also say that Palm Desktop, Filezilla, WinRAR, Nero 5.5 , Crystal Reports 9, and some Adboe apps, all have been running without apparent problems.

Jim,
That's good news. Quite a variety you've got. It'll be interesting to see what happens in a more general population after it is released. I'd almost guarantee that someone will find a combination that won't work & much of the trade press will have headlines about how SP-2 breaks machines.

It's only summer in the civilized world! (It's winter in Oz and NZ, for example! )

John,

Then that will allow them to watch us, in the Northern Hemisphere, struggle with SP2 for 6 months before they will be able to download what should be a bug free release in their summer environment.

John,
You are so correct, I did NOT think about that. Also that statement came from a North American based NewsLetter.

You will be able to order this CD when Windows XP Service Pack 2 becomes available later this summer (Winter for those from Down Yonder).

Re: SP2 - don't all rush in at once! (XP SP1)

We tested WXP SP-2 RC2 on couple machines. There were no conflicts with installed programs (MS Office, Novell Client, Adobe Acrobat), but the most annoying thing is that SP-2 won't recognize Symantec Antivirus Corporate Client (v.8.5, 9.0, 9.01) as installed Antivirus program and shows the message "Your computer is not protected". When we installed Symantes Antivirus 2004 (for home users), SP-2 cannot recognize are virus definitions up-to-date or not. It looks like Microsoft pushes to its own Antivirus program.
