Maximized (XP SP-1)

I cannot seem to get my windows to open "non-maximized". I thought I turned off the "Remember each folder's view...", and then set up a folder the way I wanted, and then Tools/Folder Options/View/Apply to All Folders... but still I'm getting maximized widows...

How do I get this "off"??

The 'remember each folder's view' applies to the sort-by column settings and the view (details, icons, etc.) rather than the window size.
WE - like most other applications - reopens in the state it was closed. I don't think you can specify different sized windows depending on the folder you are viewing.

Can't you though set the default to NOT maximized? I'm not (wasn't) sure you could in 2K, but at the same time I don't remember this problem popping up before...

Try sizing WE the way you wish then closing with CTRL + "X in upper right corner".

Yea, but first, it can be 000's of folders... and, maybe even more importantly, "It's the principle of the thing..."

As I said above, I don't believe WE can remember different sized windows for different folders. It should re-open in the window size it was last closed in, regardless of what folder or view.
Is this happening? - or are you saying WE does not re-open in the same window size as it was closed in?

I agree with what Leif said, I don't believe you can size the windows per folder. WE should 'remember' the size from the last window previously closed. That's as good as it gets.

I'm maybe not being clear...

Whenever I've installed Win -- any version -- the windows -- any -- would open in a "normal" state -- NOT minimized, and NOT maximized.

But now, any shortcut I set up, although showing "normal" in the properties, is opening up *maximized*, and *all* I want is to go back to "normal" openings.

Yes I understood what this question is, Chuck. Have you checked the thread I suggested? The result of that should be that you should be able to open Explorer, click on the "restore" square to take it OUT of maximized mode, manually size it to whatever size you want, and, as you were told (by your son?) it should then "remember" that setting.

No. I understand (and have read)... but it still does not answer my underlying question or solve the attendant issue: I wanted to be able to NOT have to size each window separately... in 2K you can, as they do NOT start out maximized... oh well...

You can resize a window to the size you want and then go to "Tools, Folder Options" and then the View tab and select 'Apply to all folders'.

This will change ALL folders to the current settings, including display type (list, Details and etc), and any other settings you may ave applied to the current folder.

That's what I thought and think for past versions of Win... but in XP, if I set a window specifically to NOT MAXIMIZED, that one setting does NOT seem to carry forward to other windows...

The columns, sorts, view etc. do, but not the size...

This, as stated, is specifically strange since in all previous versions of Windows, the default was NOT maximized...

??
