Start up problem

I have the encountered a start up problem on a Windows 98SE machine. During boot up, just before the Windows Screen should appear, the DOS screen come on with the following message:
The compression driver cannot be set up correctly. Get a version from your vendor that is compatible with this version of windows.
Press any key to continue-----------

I have no idea what this is all about (compression driver for what?), since I do not know what somebody in my absence has don to this PC, which was working fine before.
Any ideas what to look for? Would appreciate anybodies help on this one.

Thanks,
Oskar F. Neuhold

Re: Start up problem

This is usually caused by an incorrect version of boot files in the root directory of the bootable drive. Try this: use a Windows boot disk and boot the computer. At the A:> prompt type:

sys c:

and press enter. You should see the message System Transferred after this. Reboot the computer without the disk in the A: drive and the issue should be resolved.

Excellent! This leaves you with more time to wonder exactly how something like this could have happened to begin with....
