Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

I have a user of Outlook in a stand alone configuration, not connected to an Exchange server. She is getting the following error messages every time she starts Outlook: "There is a problem reading one or more of your reminders. Some reminders may not appear. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment."
I cannot figure out how to determine which appointment is referenced. She has said that she is not receiving any reminders even though she has about 5 different recurring appointment entered.
Is there some way for me to determine which appointment(s) is causing this message? Once I have found it, what is the best course of action to remove this error message?
Thanks

Start out by following the first two suggestions in <!post=this post,317113>this post<!/post>, post back to this thread if it doesn't help. Be sure that when you run the two suggestions Outlook is closed and there are no Outlook processes running.

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

It sounds as if one of the recurring appointments has become corrupted. In order of likelihood, I would suggest: recent amendments and age. In each case, I would suggest deleting the exisiting recurring appointment and creating a new one (with the same information) to take its place.

It may also help, for future reference, for the user to compact their PST file regularly: right-click on Outlook Today in the tree view pane, and choose Properties|Advanced|Compact Now.

John:
Suggestion line 2: Start up Outlook with the /CleanReminders switch to delete and regenerate the reminders cache.
Do I have to regenerate the reminders or does Outlook do this?
Thanks for the help.

Using the /cleanreminders startup switch does it for you.

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

I copied Outlook.pst to another PC and I have started to work on the file.
I did use the Scanpst utility. Some errors were found and corrected. I started Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch but there did not appear to be any difference.
Through the view, all recurring appointments, I started to cancel all but found one that I could not cancel via that view. I switched back to the calendar view and canceled the appointment from there. Unfortunately the appointment is still in the recurring view.
Also when I start Outlook, after about 30 seconds, I get a error message saying Outlook is unable to start the reminder service and no reminders will be displayed. This is correct as I get no reminders when I schedule a new appointment with a reminder.
I do have the reminder display and sound turned on too via Tools>Options...
Any suggestions about the next step to try?
Thanks

It is beginning to sound as if something in your Appointments folder has become corrupted. Is this a PST that has been imported from an earlier version of Outlook?

One thing you might have to consider is rebuilding the PST.

Back up the old PST first.
Create a new PST.
Drag and drop all the contents of all your defaults folders other than Appointments
Drag and drop all your non-default non-Appointments folders.
For your Appointments, drag and drop those without reminders to the new PST. Recreate the Appointments with reminders.
Close Outlook.
Remove the old PST from the default folder
Reopen Outlook [/list]HTH

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

I took unkamunka's suggestion with a slight change. I started with another pst file which did not exhibit any problems. I stripped everything (data) out of it and imported all the folders from the original corrupted pst file. Everything is working now. Thanks.
But I am still confused about one thing.
Playing with the original pst file I found, by checking each appointment, that one of the recurring appointments was corrupted After deleting that appointment I also found a reminder message coming up but the original appointment had been canceled. This reminder message would not disappear until I re-started Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch. But then I got the error message that the reminder service could not be started. My outstanding question is still: Is there a way to re-start the reminder service
I got around this issue by following unkamunka's advice but I continue to wander about that error message.
Thanks for all the help.

I'm a bit unclear; are you still opening the old PST, and has the "unable to start reminder service" problem now followed you to the new PST? Are Reminders not firing at all in Outlook?

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

My own view is that the /cleanreminders switch (like the various other /clean.... switches) works for various relatively simple situations. When, however, something more complex arises - such as your error message - it becomes unclear whether the error message is reporting a single problem, or a single instance of corruption, or several instances of corruption. In your case, it appears it may have been more than one instance of corruption. I hesitate to speculate further. Glad that you were able to sort the problem. I would be surprised if you (or anyone you know personally) saw that same error message again in the next few years. HTH

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

I'm still unclear if the problem IS fixed, and I noticed that Outlook 2003 has a
/cleansniff
startup switch which deletes duplicate reminder messages. If you are still having issues, try running it.

Also, if no reminders are firing, it's possible that you created a second Calendar Folder and deleted the default one. If so, make a backup copy of your PST, and run the
/resetfolders
switch, which will recreate the default Folder for you. Then you can drag your calendar Items to it in one run using a tabular Calendar View, such as Events to select them all and drag-&-drop.

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

John:
As far as I know after 1 day of operation, the user has had no problems. The reminder function is working correctly.
My correction process:
I took a copy of the pst file from the user's PC and installed it on a PC in my office in place of the pst file on my PC. I performed all my trouble shooting at my office. After coming up with an apparent correctly functioning pst file, I took that file back to the user's PC and installed it in place of the original corrupted file. I am continuing to monitor the user to make sure that the problem has been resolved.
Once I found a process to resolve the problems, I went back to the original pst file twice and repeated the steps to resolve the problems. I found that every time I opened Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch, I received that error message stating that the reminder service could not be started. Subsequent normal openings of Outlook with that pst file continued to generate the error message. I also opened other pst files, from other Outlook applications and found the same thing. I do not have access to other Outlook 2003 instances, so I could not verify the operation any further.
As stated earlier, I got around the problem by having Outlook start-up with a clean pst file and then I imported all folders from the pst file that was causing the reminder error message.
I did not intentionally create a second Calendar folder. I was not aware that I could do that.
For privacy reasons, I have returned all file back to the user. I should be able to get a copy of the original pst file and work with your suggestions in the next few days
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Reminder messages not appearing (Outlook 2003)

John:
I have retrieved the corrupted pst file and placed it in the folder for Outlook to use when starting up.
Whenever I start Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch, I always get the message that the reminder service cannot start. As I said previously this also happens with a noncorrupted pst file.
If I then shut Outlook down and restart with the /resetfolders switch, there is no error message. Following this operation with a noncorrupted pst file, I immediately start seeing reminder messages again.

For my particular problem, I decided to only delete the known recurring appointment that had problems.
I reloaded the original corrupted pst file and as soon as I deleted that corrupted appointment, the reminders screen appeared and everything appeared to start working. For this particular issue, it appears that I really did not need to go through all the other steps. That is what hindsight is all about.
If you might direct me to any reference with more details about those switches, I would appreciate it.
Closing this off now; thanks to everyone for all the help

In my installation of Outlook 2003, the switches are in the Help under Command-line Switches; they can also be found in MS Office On-Line
