Browser startup page (IE6/ Win98SE)

I'm wondering if it's possible to configure IE6 to open with a blank page (about:blank) BUT to have the homepage button set to a "real" URL, like www.google.com. I suspect not, but here's hoping...

thanks

I managed to open with a blank startup page by creating a valid desktop shortcut, then changing the url to "about:blank"
This only works with that initial shortcut, though....

Yes! I followed your lead Leif, and changed the target of the QuickLaunch IE item to:
"C:Program FilesInternet ExplorerIEXPLORE.EXE" about:blank

Works a treat. This is where I launch any new instance of IE from anyway, so it's perfect. I couldn't find anything on commandline parameters for IEXPLORE, but there ya go.

Glad it worked!

Interestingly, if you - or at least I - make the url simply "blank", you end up with a blank page with just the message:
"Your domain is in the process of been moved or registered"

That's because without the 'about: ' the browser is trying to search for a site named blank. You are getting a DNS error. So, you'll see whatever your standard DNS error message contains.

So Bill Gates also owns my house and land now, does he? Oh, I see... domain as in IP address. Sorry Bill.

Re: Browser startup page (IE6/ Win98SE)

You could be right, but I've never seen it before. I would expect to get the normal blue "i" and "The page cannot be displayed" message, with half a screen of text telling me what to try.

If I enter simply the word "nothing" in the address bar, I get the normal DNS error page, but if I enter "about:nothing", I get an empty page with just the word "nothing" written on it! The address 'blank' seems to mean something.

Intriguing but highly unproductive research...

???
My meanderings were simply to do with what you get if you simply enter 'blank' or 'nothing' in the address bar. Alan's original post was for a solution without changing the homepage.....

Did the browser try to navigate to http://www.blank.com? I guess it might depend on your "search from the address line" setting.

Nope! - that draws a, er... blank
(Does www.blank.com exist? - I don't get anywhere with it.)

It gives this explicit message below.....

At first I thought maybe this was a "friendly" error from IE, but given the bad grammar, I have to think it's something else... what, I don't know.

What's the tool bar below the IE address bar? Could it be doing this?

No toolbar - I use MyIE2 and it has tabbed windows.
I get the same message with IE6, Netscape and Firefox - it has to be something deliberate....
