Remove 'Do not check spelling' from a Style (Word 2002)

While modifying a style, I go into Format, Language. The language is set to English (U.S.) and the "Do not check spelling or grammar" box is checked but grayed out. I can click twice to remove the check and OK out but when I go back in, the box is still checked. Is there a way to remove the check permanently from the language in the style?

When I check English (U.S) under Tools, Language, the box is not checked.

    Hi Sherry:
I'm not sure I can help, but can you clarify something. If the box is greyed out, how can you remove the checkmark?

Later: It ocurrs to me that perhaps you have text selected some of which is set to "do not check spelling or grammer" & some of it is. In that case, the checkbox appears a light grey & the checkmark can be removed. When you change the style, do you have text selected, or just the cursor in the text?

Re: Remove 'Do not check spelling' from a Style (Word 2002)

    Hi Phil,

When I open Format, Language, the box and the check mark on "Do not check spelling or grammar" is grayed out. I can click the check mark once and it will turn black. I can click it again and the check mark is removed. I can then click OK twice to get out. When I go back in to Modify the Style, the box is checked again. Any time I use this style, I can't check spelling or grammer until I select all, Tools, Language, and remove the check. It would be nice to remove the check permanently from the style.

Hi Phil, regarding your second question, I have tried both (modifying the style with either text selected or just the cursor in the text) with the same effect.

    Hi Sherry:
Do you have Tools/Templates & add-ins/Automatically update document styles checked? If you do, you should UNcheck it because that will copy styles from the attached template. Also, the behavior that you describe (a light grey box with a subdued checkmark) means that there is a mixed set of text that contains & doesn't contain the property. However, I can't figure out why you would get that in a dialog box if you haven't selected any text. Furthermore, in Word 2000, I can't even get it when I select text with mixed properties. Do you have any add-ins? If the first thing I mentioned doesn't help, see the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

Re: Remove 'Do not check spelling' from a Style (Word 2002)

For reference/explanation - what you describe is not 'grayed out', it is merely shown in shades of gray. When a checkbox is shown in shades of grey (but the description is still in black) it means that part of your selection has this applied and part doesn't. Clicking in the box unchecks it for the whole selection, clicking again checks it again.

If it was 'grayed out', as in not available, the description text beside it would be gray too.

In this case, it looks like the style is using something from elsewhere that has the 'do not check' option in force, although the rest isn't.

    Hi Beryl:
    Thanks for explaining this better than I had. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
