    Imminent disk failure (XP SP1)

During boot up I am getting a warning of imminent hard disk failure with a recommendation to back up data (which I have done). Occasionally I get 'disk boot failure' and then it boots OK after re-try. How is this problem detected, should I heed it and what would loungers advise?

1] Backup anything of value. Now!
2] Run a thorough chkdsk. Now!

    Is your HD formatted NTFS?

To add to what Leif says, make sure you have all Install CDs and any activation keys for all software. You might be able to get the keys from the Help/About in each application, if you have mislaid them.

It might also be worth seeing if you can do a complete disk-to-disk copy (including the boot sectors/files) to your replacement hard disk, before the current one dies. Provided there is no disk corruption on it (watch CHKDSK C: /F /V /R carefully for "bad sectors" and the like), you may save yourself a lot of effort this way...

And in addition to what Leif and John have said, it would probably be worth a shot to download the disk diagnostics software (free) from the manufacturer of the hard drive and run it, AFTER you do all the previous stuff. It might confirm or disavow the message you've been getting.

It's a 40GB Maxtor disk partitioned 16GB FAT 32 and 24 GB NTFS. I've run chkdsk with all the switches on both partitions and no errors are reported. I still get the ominous warning at boot up. I'll now try the disk diagnostics approach.
    Thanks for the suggestions.
