    Number format: 1,000 = 1k ... How? (2000)

So, I have a spreadsheet of the contents of a series of directories (upon which I want to make comments on each file). The size of the directories are listed in bytes. Not terribly useful. I'd like Excel to display the file size in either kilobytes or megabytes. The help file gets close, but doesn't explain how to make Excell substitute ### with "k" or ###### with "m". Suggestions please?

    Halfway there

I just figured out part of the answer! To make Excel display 1k instead of 1000, the format is "#,k". I still haven't worked out how to make it display megs though.

    Made it!

So, a bit more blundering around and I've learned I can shorten it to megs with the format: 0.0,, "m". This rounds 53640979 to 53.6 m.

    Thanks everyone!

You know, this is sort of like the guy who runs in to his group therapy session with a huge problem, talks about it until he figures it out for himself, then dashes off without a word spoken by the other participants. My life is like that some times.

    But What Kind of 'megs'?

If yoou are talking of "megs" in terms of Mb, there are very many people who regard 53,640,979 bytes as being being 51.2 Mb (53640979/1024/1024). HTH

See <post#=255499>post 255499</post#> for a custom format which will convert to GB, MB or KB as appropriate

Though it doesn't fix the issue of 1024 as the "unit", sorry.

So does that mean that the Y2K 'bug' should byte some time in 2048?
