    inserting shortcut onto contact page

Anyone know how I can insert a link or shortcut to a word file into the text area at the bottom of a contacts page within Outlook?

I have set up a public folder (small NT network) containing client contact info and would like the word file which contains further info on that client to be accessible from that page. However, insert...file simply inserts a copy and I'd prefer a shortcut out to Word. Anyone got any idea how to do this? I'm sure it can't be that hard but I don't know where to start.

In Word, create a hyperlink by typing 'More Info' (or whatever) then select and right_mouse to set the hyperlink.
Copy and paste the link into the text field in the contact.
Not very pretty as it shows the whole path to the file, but works.

I see what you mean but I can't get it to work. It works when I refer to a website but not to one of my word documents. The link appears properly when I paste it but doesn't function. What am I not doing?

What version of Outlook? - (I'm using OL2K and Word 2K).

When you created the hyperlink, did you use the browse-for-file function or just type it in?
I have a feeling I tried it to a mapped drive and the hyperlink resolved it to the full path.

When you created the hyperlink in the Word doc, did that link work?

does your insert button in that dialog have the little triangle that indicates the button expands for more choices? If so, you should see insert as shortcut as one of the options.

Also, there might be some other methods of getting your end resut by using journaling or assigning contacts to the doc. I really haven't used journaling for more than hte basics, so i'm not really sure how close it'll get you.

Re: inserting shortcut onto contact page

    I'm using Word 2k and Outlook 2k
When I created the hyperlink, I used the browse function.
It worked perfectly within Word (ie it went and found/opened the Word document I wanted) But when I pasted it across to the outlook contacts page - it sat there but didn't function. I did a second one for a website link and that worked perfectly within the contact text area - simply didn't like refering to a Word link??

I certainly can't see "insert as shortcut" but perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. Are you referring the the insert button available when I am in text area of contacts page. If so, there are no triangles or extra options.

    Strange.
BTW - I never spotted that Insert as shortcut option from Mary. That may be your best option 'though I'd love to know how to rename it.

Hold on - just had a play. I can't believe there is not a better solution but:
Create a desktop shortcut to the document.
    Right_mouse/Copy.
Paste into the text area of your contact.
    This can be renamed.

when the file system dialog is open, at the bottom where the file types to show and the file name field is, my insert button can expand and i have options for as shortcut, as text, as attachment and just plain insert.

There is a better way Lief.
On the contact page pick Insert/File.
In the file browser navigate to the file you want to insert.
Click the drop down list with INSERT at the lower left and pick shortcut (or attach or text or whaterver)
Now, right click the inserted icon (for file or shortcut) and click properties. You can edit the label line here.

Re: inserting shortcut onto contact page

    Yep - that does work.
    Now.
But when I tried it yesterday, it would not let me re-title/label/name it. I could change it in properties as you suggest, but it wouldn't 'stick'.

Re: inserting shortcut onto contact page

An indirect Thanks!, as this led me to an overlooked feature in OL98. To add shortcuts to files in e-mail:

Select Insert, Object, Create from File, Browse (navigate) to the file you want to insert, OK.
Then click Link, Display as Icon, OK.

The shortcut is not renameable in OL98.

I know what you mean. If I had a nickle for each time I really knew what my computer was doing I'd be lucky to have two dimes to rub together.
