Why Can't I get Word97 To Show HTML Files?

Until today, each time I opened an HTML file in Word97 it would convert the file and display it in its output format. But now, suddenly, all I get when I try the same procedure is the HTML code. Can anyone please tell me what I might be doing wrong? Thank you.

Perhaps you have it set to open the file as HTML under file, open?
Could it be something to do with having Outlook set as your e-mail editor?
    Just a few ideas.

    Hi Ian,

See if your File of Type in File/Open is set to "Recover text from any file".

Thanks for the suggestion BAM. The 'File of Type' is set to "All Files" - is that what it should be?

Thank you GF. As you'll see from my reply to BAM the 'File of Type' is set to "All Files" - so I don't think that's the problem. I don't use Outlook at all - so it's not that either. But, come to think of it, I don't know what program I use as the e-mail editor (probably Word - see my reply to Dave) *and* I don't know where to look to find out!

I think you're right Dave (I can't imagine I would have set any other program to do this)... but how do I check it out, and what should I do if this is so? (Sorry to be so dumb - but this is all new territory for me; I've never had a problem like it before).

    Hi Ian,

As another idea, go to Tools/Options and on the General tab turn on "Confirm Conversions at open". When you open an HTML file, what is selected in the Convert file list?

Your Files of Type can be set to "All Files" if you like. My favorite is "All Word Documents".

The one you want to be careful of is "Recover Text from any file". Just about any file can be opened as "Recover Text..." This is a useful tool if you need to recover the text from a corrupt file, but it can also fool you into thinking something is wrong with your document if you don't realize you are opening it as "Recover Text...". A document will "lose" the formatting and a web page will display the HTML code.

If you want to see how a document looks in Recover Text, one note to make is that it is a "sticky" setting, so you need to change the Files of Type back to Word Documents, All Files, etc.

Re: Why Can't I get Word97 To Show HTML Files?

Thanks BAM... bingo! That's exactly what was needed. Somehow that option had been unchecked (the default setting?) and consequently the "Convert File" dialogue window wasn't coming up at all. Because of this I guess W97 used the first option in the list: "Text Only" and this is where the trouble started.
I can't thank you - and the other 'loungers' - enough. Just know that you have my gratitude.

    Hi Ian,

<<I guess W97 used the first option in the list: "Text Only">>

Actually if Word can not determine which converter to use then it will attempt to open it using the "Recover Text from any file" format.

Although I wonder why it didn't automatically use the HTML convertor.... What is the file extension you are using?

    Hi BAM

Thank you for the W97 conversion info. I now understand the position (at least a bit more than I did a moment ago). <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

To answer your question re the extension I'm using: it is 'HTM'. Does that cause a problem?

Re: Why Can't I get Word97 To Show HTML Files?

The file extension question was more for my own curiosity and "mumblings" about what is *suppose* to happen. <g>

The of the methods that Word uses to automatically select a convertor is the file extension. *.htm is valid so I don't know why it didn't recognize it.

More out of curiosity if you don't mind:
Are you viewing file extensions? If you select a file you had difficulty opening, right-click on it and select Properties, what is the MS-DOS file name?

I'm wondering if you have file names such as Webpage.htm.txt and don't realize it.

Mumble away my friend! If you can get to the bottom of what was happening it'll be worth it. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

DOS filenames? Neat thinking... but when I checked out those files I saw *.HTM for all of them (ie BANNER~1.HTM, BOILER~1.HTM, etc). Sorry.
