Choosing an alternate style sheet - when? why? (Fi

I noticed this odd thing this afternoon: a new icon at the bottom left of the status bar (see attached image). It was a pop-up that let me choose between a named stylesheet and a "Basic Theme" (which I assume showed the built-in default theme of Firefox). The only thing that seems to me unusual about the site I was visiting ([utl]http://masterbuilder.intuit.com/[/url]) is that the style sheet was "inline" in the page and had a name attribute ("global").

My question: since choice is nice, why haven't I ever seen this before on any other site? The help is silent, but there is a really long thread on the Mozillazine forums that discusses the built-in feature and an extension with more functionality. I think I have a headache now...

Actually, here are some really dramatic examples. These authors purposely coded alternate stylesheets. Was it "because they could?"

This feature has been available for a fair number of iterations of the browser. From memory, it became available about the same time as tabbed browsing. Obviously, it has not generated the same groundswell.

I think if users could apply their own choice of skin to the browser page, that might generate interest, but if it's left up to the site's author, yeah, whatever.
