    Print Screen (Windows XP Pro)

Since installing Windows XP I haven't been able to use my Print Screen feature. When I attempt to capture a screen and paste it into a document, all I get is the little red X in a box. This also happens when I try to copy something from the Internet.
I assume something needs to be turned on or turned off.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

The "Print Screen" worked the same in XP as it has to all other versions. There is the use only the "Print Screen" button, and then there is the the use of it with the "Control and Alt" buttons.
How are you using this feature?
Also if you have installed a third party program, what is it?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Well, I expected it to work the same as I have used it before, but it doesn't. I simply click on the Print Screen button when I want to capture a screen shot. Then I open Word and hit Control V to paste. I get a frame with nothing in it but the little red X in the top left-hand corner.

As for third party software. Yes, I have other software installed but nothing I didn't have when I used Windows ME.

Do you get the same result if you paste into, say, Paint, or is it only in Word?

I hadn't tried it with Paint until you asked the question. It works fine in Paint. It does NOT work in WordPad or Word. I have Office 2003 installed and Windows XP.
Thanks for replying to me. I forgot to thank Dave earlier.

Since it works in Paint, it's not a problem with PrintScreen, but a problem with WordPad and Word. That is strange, for WordPad is part of Windows XP, while Word is part of Office 2003. If you select Insert | Picture | Clipart... or Insert | Picture | From File... in Word, and select any picture, can you see it?

Well, this is "weirder" and "weirder". In Word 2003, I can see the Print Screen photo I pasted into a document in Reading View. I cannot see it in ANY other view...not Normal, not Print Layout. Only in Reading View. Also, I tried inserting a headline in WordArt in a Word document and the same thing happens! I can see the WordArt in Reading View only. Otherwise I see a box showing the boundaries.

I feel something in my Options window has been turned on or turned off and that is what is causing this problem.

You don't happen to have checked "Picture Placeholders" in the View tab of Tools | Options..., do you? Although that still wouldn't explain why pictures are not displayed in WordPad.

    Hans, You are so smart!!!

Thank you! I kept feeling it was something like that, but I didn't know enought to figure out what was wrong.

    I appreciate your help.

    Barbara,

Since you asked, two third party programs that come to mind to me for extending "printer screen" are "Gadwin" (free) and Snagit (shareware last time I checked, which was years ago). Worth a try if you are ever doling more than a few captures at any one time.

    Hope This Helps

Oh my Gosh! That is so cool!
I really love Woody's Lounge for the generosity of its subscribers. I have learned a lot from the people in this Forum.
Jim, I tried both the links you suggested. TechSmith looked really great but wasn't offered as shareware any longer. All I could find was the online purchase price of $39.95. I then tried Gadwin and downloaded a trial version.
I had no idea this software existed. I will put it to use in the next few weeks and see if I can benefit enough to purchase the software. I really like being able to choose the file format and the size of the capture.
Thanks again, Jim, for telling me about this software.

Try PrintKey-Pro from A. Bolliger. Great and good.

Thanks for this suggestion, Adam. It looks very similar to the Gadwin software.
I'll keep the URLs for both.
