PerfectDisk 6.0 update

Perfect disk 6.0 Build 34 was released July 21st. I used the 'autoupdate' to download it. Have been running it since without a problem.

Well, one more case of software updating that works for some and not others. I'll never understand it. I checked my Help file and it says I'm running Build 31, so I clicked Check for Update. The response says I'm using the latest. Just for the heck of it, I checked my Sygate traffic logs and the program evidently DID send something up without blocking. Oh well..... I don't really mind downloading stuff, which I just did.

Big Al,

Who's list have you gotten on? You seem to have lots of trouble with update checking.

Funny, ain't it? That's why I checked the Sygate logs to be sure it wasn't a culprit. I DO have LOTS of stuff that updates just fine, so I wouldn't think it's a lockdown in my OS. But I have had more than my share. Well, that's what all this sharing in The Lounge is about. At least we eventually learn about it and can go get whatever it is, manually.

Hi Joe,

I must be on the same list as Al. My current build is also 31 and the update feature states I am current.

Cheers, Bob

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0 update

Hi Al,

Just spotted the following at Raxco's site...

PerfectDisk V6.0
PerfectDisk V6.0 has an automatic update feature. This update feature can be set to automatically check for and/or install any updates that it finds. To manually upgrade PerfectDisk V6.0 to the latest version:

Launch PerfectDisk V6.0
Click on Help
Select Check For Updates
If you are behind a firewall and/or cannot auto-update PerfectDisk V6.0, please download the following to update PerfectDisk V6.0 to the latest version (Currently Build 34):

So, now I'm gonna set Raxco to a trusted site in ZA and try again... OK, that did not resolve the issue.
Will now try shutting down ZA... that didn't work either.

So, the manual route it shall be.

Cheers, Bob
Regards,
Bob

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0 update

Joe, have you any thoughts on the differences between PerfectDisk and Diskeeper? It's been a loooooooooong time since I tried PerfectDisk, back in the days of NT 4.0, and I have never had the opportunity to test the newer versions. I have simply assumed that they were similar enough that it really didn't matter which product I used, so long as it was one or the other.

I've used Diskeeper on a number of NT servers some years ago, but gave it up because:
1.
we got a number of unexplained problems that seemed to implicate Diskeeper
the Diskeeper service was a bit of a pain and seemed to take too much CPU
I got sick of all the (non)-informational messages in the Event Logs
It wasn't so much "Set It and Forget It" but "Set It and Be Annoyed by It".

I don't know whether or not PerfectDisk exhibits any or all of these characteristics, but would be interested to know!

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0 update

Hmmn, I never had a truly sour experience with the product myself. What irritated me, and still does, is that the "Smart Scheduling" that is supposed to adapt to your computing habits gets in the way. You can be working along and then WHAMMO the disk is churning endlessly. I've worked around that by setting it to run continuously in the wee hours of the morning when I am not at the workstation. Since I leave my PCs on 24/7 I can get away with that.

I confess that I rarely look at the event logs unless something screwy is going on and I'm hunting for answers. I suppose what I am saying is that I have never found a compelling reason to switch over, but I cannot quell my curiosity either!

Mark,
It has been quite a while so I don't recall all the details. IIRC, PD seemed less intrusive to me. I liked their UI better. You can go here
PerfectDisk White Papers for lots more information from the Raxco viewpoint. I think it was cheaper too - I run XP Pro and would have to buy the Pro version of Diskeeper.

Just for the heck of it Mark, you might do a search here to see if any of the old posts are still around. Seems to me there was a lot of discussion about the plusses and minuses of each product. I think MY concern that caused me to look at PerfectDisk was the improvement (apparent) in the boot time defrag made PD a winner for me. I too have been having PD defrag all my partitions in the wee morning hours and it's been doing so flawlessly ever since I installed it. I just recently did a boot time defrag on the C: drive because PD recommended it.

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0 update

Hey Joe, this is a riot! On July 29th I downloaded Build 34 and in one of my many senior moments, forgot to run the installer. The only reason I know that is that I use a single directory for storing all downloads and move them to a software storage directory AFTER I install. A few minutes ago I did my daily reboot and during the XP startup process, up pops a message from Raxco that an update is available. I waited till all the startups had finished and clicked the go ahead for Raxco. This time (3 weeks after the fact!) I now have Build 34 installed. Better late than never, I always hear people say. By the way, one of the "improvements" is better off-line defragging, which IS of interest to me.

...Offline defrag code was improved to handle highly fragmented files more efficiently. In some cases highly fragmented files would have been skipped...

Hey Al,
Better late than never really seems to apply here. Let's hope the offline defrag makes it worth while.

Re: PerfectDisk 6.0 update

I've been running Diskeeper for years and have never had any problems with it. I set mine up to run in the wee hours and it keeps my disc tidy without interfering with my life. I used Win2k and WinNT for too long to be comfortable with defrag on startup, so I've never even tried that with Diskeeper. I suspect any problems with it are the result of interactions with other software, same as any of the other utilities we use--AV, firewall, anti-spyware, etc.
