    Stopping updating linked workbooks (2000 - 2003)

I have a problem when opening up Workbooks that are linked to other workbooks on my Client's system. In 2000 I would simply say Don't update and I would be able to see the data. Now I have to make sure that calculation is set to manual before I open the workbook in 2003 - because if I don't and I choose Don't Update it still tries to recalculate and gives me errors as it cannot find the linked data.

Why does 2003 do this and how can I stop it without having to turn of calculation each time?

If the workbook has been created in an older version, Excel will try to update the links even if you click Don't Update. This is because Excel tries to update the calculation chain to the new version. According to MSKB article You are prompted to update links when you open a workbook previously saved in an earlier version of Excel your options are limited if the source is not available. The workaround you found is mentioned...

I had a suspicion that was the case. Thanks anyway.
