SP2 is still a beta, you may be looking at a complete reinstall of Windows to fix this one. This is one reason why you should never install beta releases of this magnitude on a production system that you care about.

There is only two place that build 2162 can be gotten, 1) Microsoft, 2) A WAREZ site.

If you got your copy from MS why do you not post this question at the beta testers site?
If you got it from a WAREZ site, good luck and these are know to have problems.

    Note:
    warez
Pronounced wayrz or wayrss. Commercial software that has been pirated and made available to the public via a BBS or the Internet. Typically, the pirate has figured out a way to de-activate the copy-protection or registration scheme used by the software. Note that the use and distribution of warez software is illegal. In contrast, shareware and freeware may be freely copied and distributed.

If you got your copy from MS why do you not post this question at the beta testers site? I did post it in the Microsoft Public News Groups after I posted in here. I Don't consider myself a beta tester. I just thought there may be someone in the Lounge that could help.

It did not come from WAREZ (I'm glad you defined that) I never even heard that term before. It was a beta site that I had a link to and I guess I knew there were risks but everything I had been reading seemed to point to the fact that this build would be the last build and most probably the same as the one to be released to the public later in August.

What do you think about uninstalling it through the CP?

You can try...uninstalling it seems the logical thing to do. I hope it works for you, being that it is a beta and all - I just don't trust software like that to clean up after itself...

    Re: Windows Explorer.exe (XPP Sp2)

    Hi Mark,

Actually I already did do the uninstall. It seems to have cleaned up after itself very well. The Windows explorer.exe and a couple other problems I had are now gone. I'm certainly glad because I didn't want to have to start over and beg MS to allow me to install Office 2003 again and also Norton for NSW 2004.

You can go to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2 Preview and get lots of infromation on what has changed in SP-2. There are links to several documents that should provide enough reading material for the weekend. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Joe,

Thanks I have already read much of that. It is part of the reason I decided to try SP 2.

Build 2162 has NOT been released to the public, a earlier version called RC2 was.

If you have RC2 then yes you are going to some problems. I have NOT seen the problem you are having. Is this with trying to open different types of files or were they all of the same program? Which programs are you having this problem? I will check it out.

    Re: Windows Explorer.exe (XPP Sp2)

    Dave,

If I open two or more files at a time, doesn't matter if they are *.xls, *.doc, or *.whatever the files would open but explorer.exe would crash. Again, in Windows explorer I would highlight multiple files, right click and choose open when this problem would occur. I could open as many files as I wanted from Windows explorer by double clicking them one at a time - no problem. I have uninstalled SP2 and everything is fine once again. The other problem I encountered was the extremely slow opening of OE to get to News Groups. With SP2 it took about 1 minute to open up to the NGs. Without SP2 it takes about 5 seconds at the most, if that. The name of the file I installed from was xpsp2_87d7723739e44a7704cf075ea00107639a5a496b.exe and when it was installed it showed Service Pack 2 v.2162 when you checked My Computer's properties.

What above address? Did you install it? What build is it?

    Thanks.

    Re: Windows Explorer.exe (XPP Sp2)

As I said in an earlier post, since I have removed SP2 my problems have disappeared. I would like to eventually install SP2 but now I have no idea why my problem occurred in the first place. To reiterate my problems of concern in the order of my concerns:
    1. Windows Explorer.exe crashes every time I use it to highlight multiple files and then do a Right Click and choose Open from the Right Click menu. The files remain open in whatever application they are associated with but Windows Explorer.exe crashes and closes.
    2. Again in Windows Explorer.exe if I do a Right Click and choose Sharing and Security Windows Explorer.exe again crashes and eventually closes.
    3. I use Outlook Express to access News Groups and with SP2 installed it takes a minute or longer to open to these NGs. With SP2 remover it takes 2 to 5 seconds to open.

With the exception of item 3 above could the problem be attributable to the Right Click context menu? If so, what can be done to correct it?

Since uninstalling SP2 on my troubled machine I have run a SFC /scannow and found absolutely nothing wrong. I also have run a chkdsk /f /r and again found nothing wrong. I also ran the 2 Norton Utilities Doctors (WinDoctor and Disk Doctor) and again nothing wrong was found. I have no idea what else to look for to assure if and when I ever install SP2 again I won

    Re: Windows Explorer.exe (XPP Sp2)

I did a search on the above file name and it appears to of the WAREZ source of all of the sites that have it listed. It is NOT the 2162 build from MS, but a copy that has been hacked to bypass the protection and what ever else. So, you need to really check out your machine and make sure the uninstall did NOT leave anything behind.
