Installed DVD-RW but no drive letter

I have just installed a DVD-RW (platform:WinXP Pro) and in the device manager it shows as working OK but My Computer or the explorer does not have it as a drive. I did not get a software CD with it. I am logged in as administrator, but cannot get this to work. Pls help!

Who is the manufacturer of the unit?
What type is it? USB? IDE? or what?
Have you tried to go to the manufacturer's website and look for drivers for it?
Is it being recognized in the BIOS properly?
Have you tried to uninstall it from Device Manager, reboot and let it attempt to see the unit again?
Need more info to help you.

Have a look in Disk Management (Right click My Computer > Manage > Select Disk Management on the left hand pane) to see what drive letter has been assigned to this device, make sure that this doesn't conflict with anything else on your computer.

If you can't see it in Disk Manager then I would suspect a hardware fault.

How did you physically connect this drive? That is, off of what motherboard port, and what cable connector. Then did you ensure the Master/Slave jumper is set right on the DVD drive AND, if not on a cable by itself, the other drive?

    Bill,
We asked all of those questions but it appears that we have scared him off or something? No responses from the originator.

I don't see where the questions were previously asked, perhaps on another thread. Nevertheless, I guess he fixed it, or gave up - or maybe went on vacation and will be back. We'll see.
