Did you happen to make a note of the error or the page you found at Microsoft? Typically you should not have to uninstall Office to update it. However, in some cases, you need to insert the CD, or point the installer to a copy of the CD on a hard drive, or in a corporate setting, point the installer to an administrative install point on a server.

Listed below is copy of error, the reference to .msp is certainly the case on my computer. A search of the computer for .msp files found 14 all of which report because the service to be upgraded may be missing or update path may update a different version of the program, so I am stuck between not be able to update nor uninstall.. The process of updating office requires that the cd be in the drive for verification before proceeding this is certainly the case as is a stand alone home installation (not networked) running xp on 2.8m pentium with 512 memory 120 gig hd. So this helps.

    Thanks

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office updates are missing from the WindowsInstaller hidden directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if Unavailable.

Search for Office updates in the Download Catalog

    Report the error to Microsoft

You have 14 .msp files in the folder mentioned in the error message? That sounds like a good thing, not a bad thing. On the other hand, I can't believe Office 2003 has had 14 updates. Probably most or all of those are for other programs.

I think we ought to see if anyone else is able to successfully use Office Update to get this patch before taking any drastic action.

You also could try to go directly to the download page: Office 2003 Service Pack 1

I have visited the site and downloaded both the 18 and 74 meg versions as i thought the problem may have been the cd which is needed in the 18 meg download. Both produced the comment patch cannot be applied.

Success at last. Downloaded LISTool.exe from microsoft and kb 304498 followed to the letter also kb 290301 and downloaded the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and ran it selecting office 2003 only, which uninstalls the program. Reinstallation is from the hard drive due to LISTool and rquires the cd key only.
    Thanks for your input.
