Slide show of all JPEGs in a directory

Is there any program built-in to Windows 98 (SE) which can display all the JPEGs in a directory as a sort of slide-show, either on a timed basis, or by pressing PageDown/PageUp?

Failing this, is there a program that would do this simply?

(I'm asking for a friend!)

Thanks

Hi John:
Irfanview will do this rather easily. You do have to add which JPEGs you want in the slide show, but you can select & add multiple ones, so it only takes a few seconds.

Hi John,

I do not know of any built in way to do this in Windows 98, but it has been a while since I used this operating system so I would not be surprised if I am wrong.

Here is a list of freeware slideshow viewers.

Phil and Tony

thanks for the suggestions.

I tried downloading some of the smaller-sized ones from Tony's list, but the links seem dead... Grrh...

Re: Slide show of all JPEGs in a directory

Old list. The most current entries seem to be from around July of 2000.

Edited to add... You might want to take a look at LPJ SlideShow. I've used this unintrusive little program to create slideshows for CD distribution. But you can simply use a folder instead of a CD. I've attached the ReadMe file explaining how it works. HTH

I've made slideshows with Doc's recommended little utility, John and they've been enjoyed by the recipients. (Don't remember if you steered me to it, Doc - sorry!) On one of 'em I made of all collected pictures of our first grandson, from birth to three, I included background music ("My Life") that added to the flavor. I hope you'll like it too.

Re: Slide show of all JPEGs in a directory

I did the same sort of thing with some old family photos from the late 1800's and early 1900's and backed it up with some lilting sounds of nature music (Moonlit Medows by Dan Gibson). Got raves from the family for it, and only one cousin couldn't make his copy work. Also did some holiday and theme slide show CDs for my kids classes at school.

I'm pretty sure John will find a use for it too.

Doc

Your suggestion of LPJ SlideShowwas a good one, and it's customisable to NOT show a new picture every n seconds! I thought it would use the PageDown for Next and PageUp for Previous, but in fact it uses the right and left cursor keys, respectively. I would also have liked a "Rotate clockwise (or anticlockwise) 90 degrees" function, though I suppose it's better to do that in (XP) Explorer before you burn the CD/put the pictures in the folder.

Quite small, and does the job well and simply.

Thanks again!

John,

You're most welcome. Only too happy to help out. I always enjoy sharing what I know (however limited), with others. Especially here in the Lounge, with like-minded folks such as yourself.

I'm glad it worked out for you and that you found the program to be suitable for your needs. You're correct about the limits of the program. The final image folder, unfortunately, must be just that ... final images. No image manipulation tools available. But for as small as it is, it seems to do quite alot.

Re: Slide show of all JPEGs in a directory

Just to add another bit of praise for a nice, simple program... Last Monday a group of our veterans from the nursing home went on a field trip to the Cincinnati Bengals training camp location in Georgetown, Kentucky. For those of you not familiar with such things, it's mostly practice, training and a little bit of "hitting gently" mixed in. Well, the guys (and one lady) were thrilled with the outing and one of the staff took 47 photos which I made into an LPJ slidewhow and put on the computer in the library at the nursing home that residents are allowed to use. I added a little Moonlight Sonata background music and the folks are loving it. A really nice program, at a lovely "cost!" To be perfectly honest, I feel like I should make a donation to him and need to go back to the web site to make sure it ISN'T via PayPal!

Gettin' back to your earlier remark about not knowing where you got on to the program. I'm pretty sure I read about it in either PC Magazine or PC World at least 4 years ago. I know I've been using it at least that long. I might have mentioned it in the Pics Place forum awhile back, but I'm bettin' that an up-to-date guy like you Al, read about it in one of those mags or saw it on Tech TV.
