    Search Assistant (XP SP-1)

I have a toolbar loading at startup, Search Assistant, that I can turn off, each time, but NOT permanently.

I cannot see to locate the owner, the uninstaller, or the loader.

How can I get rid of this?

    Thanks
    Chuck

    Hi Chuck

You get rid of this in the same way as you get rid of other spyware! Sorry...

    Here's a reference.

But to be honest, I would try to go down the System Restore point route, if you know when you first got it. If that would cause too many problems, I would try the usual Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware routes, which you are no doubt familiar with!

    Guys:

    An add-on:

I'm going to try the reg entries as noted in the 'answers', S&D didn't help at all...

    Thanks,
    Chuck

Chuck, I haven't tried the script as I haven't had this toolbar "infect" my machines. Reading John Gray's post (and reading all of the information in his link), System Restore might be the way to go. If that doesn't work, you may be in for a "Repair" reinstallation of XP.

Ya know what worked? Not S&D, but Ad-aware.

Found another 32 "spies" after S&D, and got rid of the toolbar on first try.

    Thanks for the pointers...

Have you rebooted since removing it Chuck? From what I've read, it is very persistent and usually reappears upon reboot. If not, then that's great. Lots of horror stories about this one.

    Chuck

By sheer chance, today's (London) "Daily Telegraph" has its usual Tuesday computer bit, part of which is a Q&A...

Q My home page is being remorselessly invaded by something called Home Search Assistant. I've tried to delete it using Add/Remove Programs but I am told 'Unable to Open' then directed to the HAS uninstall page, which thanks me for using their software (!) and asks for my reasons for deciding to uninstall it. This involves clicking on a link and running a program. Needless to say I'm hesitant to do this.

    A. You are wise to be cautious. Home Search Assistant is one of the most virulent pieces of adware and removal can be a tricky business, but I have come across a couple of reasonably safe methods.
The first thing to try if you are using Windows ME or XP is to do a System Restore to a date before your PC was infected. The second method involves a couple of freeware tools, but before you do make sure everything is safely backed up, just in case. Your need to download our old friend HijackThis from: www.spywareinfo.com/us looking for 02 and 04 entries, particularly ones containing 'homesearch', 'HAS', 'xmrvd', 'javahh', 'addhd' or a lot of random characters. Next run About Buster to get rid of any files still hanging around.

I don't know whether this matches (matched!) what you had...
