Starts with Page 2 (Word 2000)

When a friend opens a new document in Word, it shows that it is page 2 but it also says it is 1/1. For example, he printed a 4 page document which he had set to have page numbers. Page one was printed with the number 2 on it and the subsequent pages were 3-4-5. How do we get it to be page 1.

Further to Don's reply, if this is happening in all new Word documents, your friend should search for & open normal.dot (not just a new document based on normal.dot). Make the change in normal.dot & save the changes. Also, your friend should make sure that he/she has at least the SR-1a update (SR-3 has been out for some time). Re: Starts with Page 2 (Word 2000)

I may have not explained the issue as well as I should have. I am attaching a picture of what MY status bar shows. Note that it says Page 1 and then to the right shows 1/1, which is correct. When my friend opens a new document, it says Page 2 but then to the right it shows 1/1. So the problem is that it says "Page 2" rather than "Page 1".

If I am to change this in NORMAL.DOT, how do I do it?

(Edited by jscher2000 on 02-Aug-04 14:05. More explanation and a picture.)
What you're seeing on the Status Bar is the "logical" page number that you or the template designer assigned, and then physical page number (which you can think of as ordinal, first, second, third, etc.) / total physical pages in the document.

To change the starting page number in Normal.dot:
    1.
Open Normal.dot for editing. (Note that double-clicking it in the templates folder defaults to creating a New document, so right-click and choose Open.)

With the insertion point at the beginning of the document, choose Insert>Page Numbers>Format. Choose Start at 1. Click OK and then Close. This should not insert any actual page number into the document, but it should correct the Status Bar.

Save and close Normal.dot and test with a new "blank" document.

    Does it work?
