Problems with security patch (Q867801-XP SP1)

After installing Windows Update Q867801, a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer, on my Windows XP Pro machine, I have had a lot of problems surfing the internet. Pages will not update after changes are made and sometimes I'll get a page that is days old. Clearing the cache fixes it, until I've browsed to the same site a couple times, then it happens again. I rechecked my security and privacy settings and everything is the same as it was before.

Now, here's the kicker: I also have Mozilla Firefox 0.92 installed and it behaves exactly the same way since installing the patch. It's obviously not simply an IE-only problem even though it's supposedly an IE patch...

I have found that the only real "fix" for this fix is to uninstall it altogether. Any thoughts or ideas?

What are your settings on Tools>Internet Options>General Tab>Temporary Internet files>Settings>Check for newer versions of stored pages? Might these have somehow been changed?

You're right that IE symptoms normally don't spill over to other browsers, so that is really strange.

The Knowledgebase article for the update (MS04-025: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer (MSKB 867801)) mentions troubling interactions with another patch. Have you checked on that possibility?

The FAQ section of Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-025 mentions that the "cumulative" update actually overwrites hotfixes that may have been installed since February. While a clean "undo" might be harmless, the patch probably isn't fully aware of the interim changes. There is a link to a "hotfix rollup" that would address problems that this could cause. Maybe this would help?
