    Rulers in Footnotes (2003)

Is there any method by which one can view a ruler when inserting and working with footnotes? I had a customer call and claim that the ruler in footnotes was available in Word 97, and then as an option in Word 2000, but appears to have vanished in Word 2003.

I don't have Word 2003, but in Word 2000 there is an option on the view menu to see the ruler. If you use Print Layout view, you can hold down the Alt key & drag the mouse on the bottom part of the ruler to see actual measurements & a vertical line that extends down the page past the footnote location.

I don't have Word 2003, but in Word 2002 (XP), the ruler is available in footnotes when you are in Print Layout view. In the footnote pane in Normal view, the Ruler button is grayed out.

In Word 2003 when you go to the footer you are immediately kicked into the page layout view and the ruler is there and usable.

    Hi Fred:
Does that mean that they've done away with the footnote/endnote pane in normal view in Word 2003? If so, that's too bad because every trip to Print Layout repaginates the document.

In Word 2002, that is true for header and footer view, but not for footnotes - in Normal view, a separate pane opens if you insert a footnote, or select View | Footnotes in a document that has them.

Does the (Word 2002) NormalViewHeaderArea command not give you a separate Header pane in Normal view? And while I can't figure out how to get into the Footer from that pane, I'm sure there was a supplemental macro provided with Word 6 or 7 (which, apparently, works just as well with Word 97 and beyond) that provided the full functionality.

NormalViewHeaderArea opens a separate Header pane in Normal view, but I fail to see the relevance for footnotes.
