Zone Alarm latest version

Hi all,
Has anyone tried the new version 5.1.011 yet and if so, with what result? It has been OK for me in the past but having seen the problems some users have had with the previous version (5.0.590.043), I thought I would wait a while before upgrading mine this time.

After going through that major hassle with version 5.0.590.043, I gave up on Zone Alarm and went to Sygate. Apparently so have a lot of others.

Re: Zone Alarm latest version

In spite of what others may have experienced, I have had no trouble at all with ZoneAlarm, possibly because I don't use the Norton antivirus. I have the latest build of ZA Pro and it works just fine. If you are using the Norton antivirus, there are supposed to be known problems, but since I have used f-Prot since the old DOS days, I haven't experienced them.

Hi Charlotte,

SUPPOSED to be known problems? ARE problems, would be more like it.

You are OK , since you don't use Norton or McAfee. Users who do, beware. If the latest "fix" works or not, I learned my lesson with ZA.

But you see, I use a *GOOD* antivirus! I referred to "supposed to be" problems because I haven't personnaly experienced them, not because I don't believe they exist. Software/hardware incompatibility is as old as computers.

Re: Zone Alarm latest version

I'm in total agreement Charlotte, I've used Zone Alarm for I don't know how long, years anyway. I have the latest build. Never a problem. I've never used Norton AV and haven't used McAfee in years. But looking through threads in the Lounge it seems to me Norton has many more compatability problems than ZA. There was a time when it almost became a mantra, having trouble installing a new app?, try disabling Norton. BTW I'm very pleased with AVG anti virus.

Re: Zone Alarm latest version

Hi Tony,

I was one of the first that installed the initial release of v5 of ZA Pro and had to back out because incoming and outgoing e-mail was not being scanned by my Norton AV 2004 app. Release 5.0.590.043 was supposed to correct the problem but I did not install that version. Two days ago, I bit the bullet and installed 5.1.011.000 of ZA Pro and all seems to be OK in my environment.

Cheers, Bob

Brian,
You didn't have problems with ZA because you didn't have Norton installed. BUT, the fact was that ZA had the incompatibility problem with Norton & McAfee, not the other way around. ZA never bothered to test itself against two of the biggest AV programs in use !

MacDonalds is also highly popular, but that doesn't say anything about the quality of the product, only about the fact that not everyone buys selectively. There really are people who like Big Macs, but I am definitely not one of them.

Maybe you don't recall it, but Norton has had compatibility problems with just about everything, going back to the earliest versions of Windows and Norton AV. Before that, the Norton Desktop had similar compatibility problems. That was happening long before ZA came along, and it hasn't slowed down. I won't buy Symantec products unless there is absolutely no alternative because I don't like their behavior with respect to other programs. The products I *do* buy, don't suffer from the compatibility issues of Norton/Symantec.

Charlotte,
Very well put . Symantec's behavior makes one wonder how they ever got to be the size they are.

Re: Zone Alarm latest version

But the fact remains that ZA hashad the current compatibility problem with Norton & McAfee when they came out with the 5.0.xxx upgrade. The older version 4.5.xxx worked fine with the two AV progs.
I wasn't referring to the elderly earlier versions of Windows & Norton.

Simple, they bought a LOT of software and some of it they kept. They purchased a very good AV product, which I used and whose name I have long forgotten, and stifled it to keep it from competing with the inferior Norton product. Oh, well, there's still f-Prot.

Dr. Solomon's I presume. (I actually got a free copy for some reason, shortly before the sale.)

Symantec acquired SecurityFocus, Riptech and Recourse and Brightmail - but didn't NA get Dr Solomons? - or did Symantec buy NA as well?
