shortcuts (Word 97)

I have Windows XP and Use Office 97. None of the shortcuts to Word Documents that I create on the desktop work. Word opens with an error message that "the document can not be found Make sure the file name is correct. " I then double click the shortcut again and the document opens in Word. I have tried all methods of creating shortcuts.
The shortcuts for Excel and Access all work perfectly.
Please help!! Thanks.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

We have had threads on this or a similar problem in the past. I believe it has something to do with an add-in or global template; the Norton Office plug-in comes to mind as a potential culprit. Do you have any third-party add-ins or global templates set up in Word?

No add on programs other than WOPR. No global templates. No Norton plug-ins. I do remember something that referred to Windows 98, but can't find the article. What do you suggest I should search the archives for?
Thanks for answering

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

The easiest and most targeted searches are for all the significant words in the error message. But sometimes there are typos in posts and you end up not finding it that way.

What I suspect is NOT a problem, since it works if Word is open, is an error in your File Types tab. Just for reference, though, does yours look like the attached (ignoring the fact that the Word executable is in a different place)? In Windows XP, you use Windows Explorer or My Computer, choose Tools, Folder Options..., the File Types tab, then scroll to DOC and click Advanced.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

Thanks for your suggestion.

I checked the file types and doc had as its action New. I changed it to Open and now, no matter what shortcut I try, I get about 5 error messages saying that the path name is wrong, search for the file. I went back and changed it to new and the same thing keeps happening. I am at a loss as to how to stop the error messages. The error messages (there are 5) are really one message that has been truncated so that 5 dialog boxes appear, each with part of the message about the path name not being valid. Any other suggestions?

Phil, I know I've seen that screenshot before. But this is the first time I noticed that the frontmost dialog is for "New" while it's on top of one that has "Open" circled. Not that it makes any difference in the command line, but it affects the DDE line.

Phil, still makes no difference. Can't open the shortcut in WORD until I have clicked through the 5 dialog boxes.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

Okay, it sounds pretty messed up. I think you're going to have to fix each of the different actions listed under Advanced. There is a trick to restoring the factory defaults. Let me see if I can find it. Searching... Okay:

WD: Word for Windows Startup Switches (MSKB 70014) says:

To start Word, force registration, and then quit:

winword /regserver

NOTE: Use this switch when you want Microsoft Word to rewrite all of its registry keys and reassociate itself with Word files, such as documents and templates.

I don't know if this rewrites "ALL" of the keys, including those that store customizations, but if you have no patience for recreating these document associations manually, it probably is your best shot. You would close Word, then use Start>Run... to run Word with the startup switch.

Thanks for noticing this. I don't know how I switched dialog boxes when creating my "masterpiece" , but I sure did. I've corrected it.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

Hans, followed your directions and re-registered Winword. Got rid of the 5 error dialog boxes and now I just get one with a word shortcut--Can not find the file And then the path name is listed, which is correct and the doc is there. Guess I will just forget shortcuts at this point. I do remember somethingl ke this happening in Win 98 and I had to add the 1%, but that isn't the case in XP. Thanks anyway for trying!!!

Libbie:
Do you have any add-ins that might affect this? Try the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> & see if the last error message clears up.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

Thanks to all who sent instructions to attempt a correction of this problem. The instructions for finding add-ins seems to be missing a step or is confusing. After finding the start up folder for Office, what document do you type the field in? I opened WORD and typed that in and found that the only add-ins are WOPR add ins. Somehow I think there should be a step to use in the start up folder. I think at this point I will just start up my docs form WORD rather than using shortcuts. Not sure on how to back up my options in Word before I try that procedure. Thanks anyway.

Re: shortcuts (Word 97)

OK. I opened the startup folder. The only 2 addins are Wopr.dot and 2X4.dot. Dragged them to the desk top. Tried a word doc shortcut and it worked! So the problemis one of these shortcuts. I will try putting wopr.dot back into the folder and see what happens. I can live without 2X4 but what about WOPR.dot? Does this mean it is corrupted or should be re-installed?

Phil, seems as though WOPR.dot is the problem! Don't want to give that up!!! Any suggestions?
