    Cant eject a removable drive

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have just bought an external USB hard disk, with which I am very pleased. One of the uses I put it to is as a backup for my Armada m700 (runs in a docking station, W2K), an also to take home and burn DVD as long term backup for data (XP Home).

Most of the time when I eject it the process works cleanly, but occasionally it wont let me because the drive is in use by something else. But nothing is visible. Is there any other process I can invoke to terminate or at least see, everything that may be getting in the way. I really dont want to have to reboot everytime I want to remove the device.

    Thanks,

    Mike C

What make is the external drive? And did it come with its own burning software?
What software are you using to burn the DVD's?
What software do you have installed (but are not necessarily using) for burning DVD's/CD's?
Are you unable to eject either via the software or by the eject button on the drive?
Does Task Manager show any other relevant application running?

Re: Cant eject a removable drive

Leif, I am sorry, I completely missed the notification email saying you had replied - and that is very strange.

The drive in question is not a burner, it is "just" a 40gig drive that I am now using to do two things, First to provide a backup to my (ageing) laptop, and second to relieve serious space problems on that laptop. What I am doing is to batch replicate this years data very frequently. This is all the data that l I have kept on the laptop. Also on the drive is all my past data, readily available. I take the drive home, where I can work on the files on my own PC if I need to, and where I have burned DVDs of the old and therefore static stuff, as a long term archive. I take infrequent burns of this years data. That sounds positive, but in truth I am only a couple of mionths into this routine.

What can I say? The disk is a USB 1 or 2 USB self-powered but needs a bit of help on the laptop. It is by Smartdisk (Firelite model), an just sits there waiting for me to access it. I clearly only ever Explore it write or read. (The "eject" I am talking about is the device, not a CD / DVD - I now see the confusion!) I always close any explorer window looking at it, and always close any file aI am accessing. Sometimes it allows me to eject cleanly, sometimes it says I cant because somethings stopping it. Nothing in task manager appears to be the culprit. - thats the puzzle.

Thansk for replying, and any ideas..

I think this happens when say you delete a file of off the USB drive, and Windows has not yet resolved the issue to the trash and things like that. Or if you have Windows Explorer open, and also when you have just read a file, say a MS-Office document, of off that drive.

If you would reboot and try to eject, it might work <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>, but then again, this rebooting in itself is too much work. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

The term is " Safely Remove Hardware", connected to the USB remove ICON. If the unit is still in used, i.e., still writing, still deleting, then this will not be available.
If you have AV package or any system scanning going on, may be looking at it, this also will not let you to Safely Remove Hardware.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Cant eject a removable drive

Somehow I am no longer getting email notification that I have replies....

Thank you all, but I get the
"The device nnnnn cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later"

when all writes are well over and there are no explorer windows looking at it, or any other app using it.

As you say closing down and restarting is not a popular option - I'm trying to save time here.

    Cheers,

    Mike C

Re: Cant eject a removable drive

Re notifications: the usual suspects are:

    1] Your email address
2] That you have selected email notification of replies in the Reply To window
3] Either a filter or spam-blocker stopping the email getting through.

#3 is the commonest and you can easily test it by changing the email address used to another, and then run a few tests. These can be done in the Test forum - simply make a post then reply to yourself. Note - the email address used is the one in your profile listed as "Email Address (Not available to other users)".
