    Reinstall programs without CD? (XP)

Is it possible to reinstall an application program in Windows XP if you've lost the original CD? It sounds too good to be true, but a support person for my DSL provider said this was one of the reasons to upgrade to XP.

I'm running Windows 2000 and have been having DSL connection issues that the support person thinks is due to missing or corrupted dll files. I mentioned I wasn't sure where my original CD was. (Of course, this possible feature of XP won't help me retroactively, but if it's true, then any future installs will be protected.)

Only if the install files were copied and still on the hard drive.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Original CD for what? With XP as with 2k reinstalling depends on how the software installation is designed to begin with.

Perhaps he is referring to System Restore? This is an option that lets you roll back certain installations to a point that the system works properly. (I really don't know what all is saved in those restore points, whether it's just system files or "everything." I suspect that it can't be "everything," so if the parts of your application that are messed up are not considered parts of the system by Windows XP, there might not be any benefit from using System Restore.)

Here a link to Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore in Windows XP that should help describe the builtin capabilities of XP to recover from install problems.
