Migrate IE Restricted Sites to Mozilla/Firefox (uh, only tested FF0.9.2)

I wanted to migrate over my list of Restricted Sites from Internet Explorer to Firefox. These are sites for which all scripting, ActiveX controls, and Java applets are inactivated.

Mozilla/Firefox support a set of preferences that start with "capability.policy" (more info: Configurable Security Policies). After much study and experimentation, and hours of debugging, I created a VBScript that would extract the Restricted Sites list from the registry and convert it to a form that could be pasted into the user.js (personal preferences) file for Mozilla/Firefox.

However... while I am able to block all JavaScript, and of course VBScript doesn't execute in Mozilla/Firefox, I haven't found a way (yet) to block ActiveX/plugins/Java. (There is a plug-in that executes ActiveX, so it's not entirely academic.) Someday I will find out and add the information to this thread. Until then, "hope this helps."

(As always, the extension of the attached will need to be changed back to VBS in order for it to execute.)

Thanks, Jefferson, this is a great tool for migration. Have you considered submitting it to the Firefox development team? One of their goals is to make migration easier, and they've already done a lot in regards to that - porting keyboard shortcuts and all.

In theory that's fine, but I can't deal with all those long bugzilla form things!

Maybe if someone just points them to this thread? Also, I'm sure they'd want to recode it using Windows APIs. I can't imagine they would distribute a VBScript solution. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

This is great. I don't have a user.js, just the prefs.js. Do I have to modify your script?

You might have a blank user.js file, mine was before... What I noticed was when I shut down Firefox, it imported all of the non-comment lines (3 lines) from user.js into pref.js. So I guess the answer is "No, just paste the non-comment lines into prefs.js and keep the text file around for reference."

OK. I pasted the whole shoot'n match into prefs.js & we'll see what happens. Thanks for this.

    Hi Phil
<hr>user.js is a user-created file that lets you keep your custom preferences in a file that Mozilla will not alter<hr>
as quoted from this mozilla.org web page.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Thanks, Ken. Guess I have a lot of reading to do. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
