Strange boxes in documents (Word 2000)

We have a couple of documents which until today were fine - but now have strange page breaks and small boxes in them - a 4 page letter is now 89 pages - with small boxes dotted around. Does anyone know of any viruses around that might be the cause - or have any other ideas please.

    Thanks very much

Make sure that "Files of Type" in the File | Open dialog has not been set to "Recover Text From Any File".

With multiple documents, a File>Open filter makes the most sense. If there were only a single document, I would suspect file corruption: When file corruption happens, normal text can be replaced by non-alphanumeric characters. One of the tell-tale signs is that direct formatting (e.g., bold, italic) may shift to different parts of the document than those to which it originally applied. If that is the case, salvage what you can with selective pasting into a new document and try to find a backup to recover the rest, because this one is toast. (Hopefully, however, this is not the case!)
