    Subtotals (2002)

    <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15> I'm looking for some information on the Subtotals feature.
First, does anyone know of a tutorial on the feature?
Second, if you sort your file then go to Subtotals and select the fields to be subtotaled and finally OK to display the subtotals, everything is just dandy. We then want to subtotal for a different sort. We go back to Subtotals and remove the totals and OK. Sort the file in a different order and go back to Subtotals. The issue is that sometimes the fields selected for the first sort are still selected and sometimes they are not. Is there some reason why they remain selected or why they are not selected?

    Hi,
I have no tutorials as such. Have you had chance to review the microsoft help files on subtotals? Secondly, are you aware that you can subtotal more that one column at a time. If yo apply a multiple column sort on the list, then subtotal two or three times on the sorted list, starting at the primary sort and ending at the lowest sort level, you can generate sub sub totals! This might help overcome the second question where you say you are sorting twice or more times induvidually for each column!
    Regards,
    Rudi

    Thanks, Rudi.

We are doing some multiple column subtotals, but need to sort because some reports are for use (using our project codes) and other reports are for the client (using the clients project codes). Each series of reports use the same columns for subtotals but completely different columns for the sort.

So I'm still wondering why the subtotal columns aren't always checked after the second sort.

It would be worth your while to tackle Pivot Tables. I had to and am glad I went through the pain of learning. People tend to get nervous about them for some reason, but they are basically a super-subtotaler that can slice-and-dice any way you want, instantly. I use them for accounting analysis out of Oracle. A final featue that is great is a drilldown ability. Any number the table creates you can click on and get the detail in a separate sheet. That is an option you choose: "enable drilldowns" Try it, you'll like it!
