auto open with connection to ISP is it possible? (XP home sp1)

I've put outllok express short cut in start up folder so that it opens minimised when I first start computer. Then I need to connect to my ISP to see if there is any e mail waiting. What I would like is for OE to open minimsed automaticaly when I connect to my ISP and therefore tell me if there is any email waiting, and from then on be able to close or open OE as I wish. Does this make sense and is there a simple setting somwhere to do this please without major reg editing or other complicated workings?

For OE, you can right-click the shortcut and choose Properties and change the Run entry on the Shortcut tab to Minimized. That will force it to the taskbar.

If you are on a dial-up connection, you will need to modify that connection to connect automagically. For broadband, there would be no need to do so.

I'm not aware of any way to have the network connection widget start an application. However, I belive that both IE and OE can be instructed to connect to the network when they start up. Close enough?

OK got that. but thats not what I had in mind. Let me try this...when I open my (broadband) connection by clicking on "dial" (see attachment) is there a way to make OE automaticaly open at the same time (preferably minimised in the task bar ).

I don't know if this will do what you are trying to accomplish, but if you open OE and click on Tools>Options. On the General tab, under Send / Receive Messages, change the setting for If my computer is not connected..... to "Connect only when not working offline" (see ScreenShot). This may start OE when you start your internet connection and check for messages. HTH

Good thought. I'm doing a bit of experimenting but a compromise seems to lie with those suggestions, thanks all.

I have BOTH my DSL connection and my mail program in start up. That way when I boot up they both start, the mail prog checks for mail and gives me an icon if there is any. Both do start up minimized.

Now why couldnt I have thought of that? This seems the easiest and simplest way, and does what I want. Thats what makes this lounge so great for the likes of me...you guys can just give a nudge in the right direction and usually come up with a solution to most things. Thanks again all.
