Shortcut for text boxes? (Word 2000)

I am working on a document where I need to use a lot of text boxes - the format of each box is always the same. I had hoped to use an autotext entry but that isn't a valid option with text boxes (from what I can see). My next option was to cut and paste, however it doesn't matter where I try and paste a text box, it always disappears to the very start of the document and is very difficult to drag down.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Many thanks

Hello Claire - Welcome to Woody's Lounge !

One thing you might want to try is to set the Layout for the textbox to 'In Line with Text' and then copy and paste it.

If you right click on the text box, then select 'Format Textbox', Click the 'Layout' Tab, and select 'In line with text'

This stops you being able to move the box around by dragging it, but it does mean that when you copy and paste it will be pasted in where your cursor is <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

you could select them all after and change the layout to 'infront of [or behind] text' if you needed to make minor adjustments.
Thanks,

Thanks for you reply!

Unfortunately, the 'In Line with Text' option is greyed out - strangely all the other layout options are available. Nice thought though

I don't use Word 2000 so I can't state categorically, but is there an option for 'float over text' or something similar? When UNchecked this has a similar effect to setting the box to 'in line with text'?

Just a thought

Thanks Beryl

Alas that option isn't there either! However, I have found a reasonable workaround by creating a macro to create the text box and apply required formatting. This still adds the box to the top of the current page, but that's much better than hunting for it at the top of the document!

Many thanks!

Glad to see you found a workaround! Well, unfortunatel I don't have word 2000 here - though what beryl pointed to is the thing needed. Perhaps there are some options that have set textboxes to float over text by default, I'm sure someone in the Lounge will know what might be the cause of the grey doubt boxes

What about 'Move box with text' or something similar? This and the previous option I mentioned are not necessarily on the same tab of the 'format box' window, though ...?

The dialog has changed since Word 97 - the screenshot below is from Word 2002/XP. "Move object with text" can be set in the "Advanced" options.

Re: Shortcut for text boxes? (Word 2000)

Hi Hans, thanks for that, and yes, I know what it looks like in 2002/XP (I use that at home) - trouble is, Claire is using 2000, the version inbetween the two I know, so I was thinking it's probably got some similarities to both 97 and 2002 without being identical to either!!

I hope there's someone out there with 2000 who can help! Or maybe, Claire, you could post a screenshot or two, so we could see exactly what you have available?

Re: Shortcut for text boxes? (Word 2000)

Hi

My options are actually the same shown in the previous screen shot, except the first 'in line with text' option is greyed out and it defaults to the last 'in front of text' option.

The 'Advanced' button gives me the move with text, lock anchor, etc options (see attached) - I've tried them all ! The move with text option means that the box stays put if I push content above it down (a useful find but doesn't solve the question in hand!). I haven't figured out what 'lock anchor' does but it didn't help with this!

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions - the macro is working well so it's only worth pursuing if you're determined not to be beaten by Word!! :-)

I have just checked and a text box is a valid autotext object in Word 2002. Although I no longer have a copy of Word 2000 handy, it certainly worked with Word 2000 when I wrote <post#=244732>post 244732</post#>

Re: Shortcut for text boxes? (Word 2000)

Hi Claire:
I currently have Word 2000 & agree with Stuart. You certainly can format a text box & save it as an autotext entry. Just format it & then select it by clicking once on the very border. Then you can press press Alt+F3 (if you want to use the normal template) to create an autotext entry...just give it a name. HOWEVER, you can NOT format a text box as inline. You can use a frame if you want an inline object.
Cheers,

It can also be used as an Autocorrect entry.

Phil et al

Thanks for this - I just tried again in the cold light of day and yes, it does work as an autotext entry! I guess I didn't have the box selected properly before so apologies for the runaround!
