Not sure about the upside-down bit, but going sideways is what I would expect.

Your standard screen is in 'landscape' - in other words, it is wider than it is tall. The resolution is given in pixels as X by Y, or width by height. When you set the resolution to 800 x 1152, it is reversing the axis and changing the display from landscape mode to portrait mode and you would normally rotate your monitor a quarter turn to view it properly. (A lot of LCD screens have a swivel joint on the back to allow you to do just this.) Typically this mode is used by people working on documents so that a full page display makes more efficient use of the screen area.

To play the old games, try to run them with Compatibility Wizard (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Program Compatibility Wizard).

Sorry - more to add. A friend suggested some games may affect registry settings, but he doesn't know how, or what to do about it, rather than re do a video/graphic card uninstall and reinstall...does this steer anyone in a direction that they may be able to give me in english?

Have you checked with the authors / web home-pages of the software in question? If it is a common issue there should be some information available.

Is it only specific games that you have this problem with?

It's weird Leif, but you were spot on about the landscape settings. Some newer games (eg unreal 2003) leave with me landscape screen, whilst old games (QIII) don't - you'd think it would be the older games that would leave a trail of woe behind them. However, any of the games, and random times for no apparent reason, resize my desktop to 800 X 600. I will look at the sites, but the inconsistency of when things go wrong, and when the DON'T go wrong, makes it hard to pin down
It would almost be as challenging as the games themselves if it wasn't so bloody annoying LOL
