What is the font for the numbers?

I have a Style that uses Outline Numbering. I don't remember what the font is I specified for the number itself... I tried "What's This" it won't let me choose the number. I also opened the template, choose Style from the Format menu, choose the style and clicked Modify. I choose Numbering from the Format button and clicked Customize. I then clicked the Font button. All the fields were blank except the fact that the number was bold.

The font for the text that follows the number is New Times Roman, Regular, 12pt. I wouldn't imagine that I used anything other than Times but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks

If it is blanked out, I would guess that it isn't the same for all the levels you have set up. Chances are that you are using Times New Roman as that is the default. But generally, if something isn't highlighted, it is because there is more than one font being used. Try just selecting Times New Roman as the font in Customize Numbering options for each level you have set up.

    Hi KT,

If you don't set a font in the Customize List dialog box then the font formats of the number will follow the style, similar to a character based style.

So from your description, the number will always be bold and the font will be the same as you used for the paragraph style.

    Hi KT,

Just to tack on a bit more about the font assignments that appear in the Customize>Font dialog:

As BAM said, if you leave these unassigned, they will always follow the font for the paragraph.

The wrinkle is that, although the font applied to the paragraph is usually the same as the font applied by the style, that isn't always the case.

So if your paragraph style produces a not bold, not italic font, the autonumber for that paragraph will normally be not bold and not italic as well. But if you were to make that paragraph bold or italic, via direct formatting, the autonumber will become bold or italic as well. In fact, you can make the autonumber become bold or italic just by applying bold or italic to the last character in the paragraph (or the just the paragraph mark itself)!

For that reason, although it is a chore, I've come around to the idea that it's better to explicitly assign the fonts in the Bullet and Numbering>Customize>Fonts dialog, as well.

    Gary
