Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3)

Edited by <!profile=WyllyWylly>WyllyWylly<!/profile> to add URL to the Mozilla products page.

     Great News !!!
On Wed. Aug.4, 2004 Mozilla.org released minor upgrades to three of its major products. Firefox 0.9.3; Thunderbird 0.7.3 and Mozilla 1.7.2.
Mozilla said and I quote -" They were created to correct four possible security vulnerabiities in past versions of each product. The Buildbar has links for all three releases."

Re: Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3)

I couldn't figure out how to update Firefox: Tools>Options...>Advanced>Software Update>Check Now told me there were no updates. So I downloaded the new installer and ran it. About halfway through I had a terrible thought: "what if I lose all my bookmarks and cookies?" It would have been a good idea to back up my profile folder, but as far as I can tell, I didn't lose anything.

Anyway, if there is some other, faster way to update (what is the Buildbar and do they serve margaritas?), I hope someone will post about it.

You can use MozBackup to backup and restore profiles.

I upgrade Firefox using the following procedure

Backup profile using MozBackup

Manually backup the searchplugins folder (C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxsearchplugins)

Uninstall Firefox 0.9.2

Install Firefox 0.9.3

Restore searchplugins folder

Reinstall other plugins such as Flash & Shockwave[/list]The installation successfully picked up my profile from 0.9.2 so the bookmarks, cookies, extensions and themes were retained during the upgrade.

There are always Install Notes posted - for Firefox, Thunderbird or Mozilla. Occasionally, the new Install will require you to have a new Profile - and this will be mentioned in the Install Notes. So far, new Profiles have only been required with new numbering versions. (Strange to have a that actually is worth reading!)

Re: Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3)

It's my understanding that the update feature in Firefox still isn't working properly. However, just downloading the new version installer and then installing over the previous version will preserve your profile settings. As a later poster noted, there are some intances in which it's recommended that you do a clean install, but that's usually noted in the release notes. In the case of a clean install, you'll need to backup your bookmarks, userchrome, and some other files, and then just copy them back to your profiles folders. In addition to the backup program someone else mentioned ("Mozback"), you might want to check out Bookmark Backup (http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/?extension=bb), which reputedly will back up more than just bookmarks. I haven't used either program. I just back up my entire profile when I do my regular hard drive backups, and then restore what I need from the backups if my Firefox profile gets corrurpted or deleted.
