IF Fields in Merge (XP)

The finishing touches my directory mailmerge is the page numbering. I have set the page setup to have different headers/footers for the 1st and odd and even pages.

The first 2 pages are included only before the first record.

To start the page numbering on the 3rd page ( in a booklet) i have put in this field on the odd footer:
{ = { PAGE } - 2 }, and when the merge is done this works fine. Nothing on the 1st page, athen the numbering starts from 1 on the 3rd page. No probs...

in the even footer I have done the following:
{ IF { PAGE } = 2 "" { = { PAGE } - 2 } }

this doesnt work in the merge. The field isnt merged or brought into the new merged document like the other one is, just the result of the first IF statement . I have tried the formula in a normal document, and it works fine.

I am a little stumped.
Thanks,

pmatz

I think the IF only works correctly in a mail merge if you test a merge field. You will have to insert the field afterwards into the merged document.

But hopefully one of the Word gurus will come up with a solution.

I agree with Hans, you won't be able to bring across different headers. You can save your two nested fields individually as Autotext entries & then insert them in the merged result. This won't be too difficult because the merge format the merged document to have different odd/even header/footer areas.

Cool. The odd page footers field come across fine, so what I've done for the moment it on both the odd and even footers used the
{ = { PAGE } - 2 }
which works well.

I dont quite follow what you mean about autotext entries, will have to look into that, but thanks for the pointers .
Thanks,

Re: IF Fields in Merge (XP)

For the autotext entries, do the following:
Create your formula fields for your even page header somewhere in a document.
Select the first one & go to Insert/Autotext/Autotext...
Select whatever template you want in the dropdown menu. If you use the "all actives templates", you'll be using the normal template.
Give it a short name. e.g. EvHdr
Go back & delete the field in the document.

Now, whenever you do your merge, navigate to an even page header in the merged document, type EvHdr & press F3. The even page field will be created in all the even page headers.
Hope this helps,
