    Hard Drive Swap (XP Home)

I have an old desktop (Box01) running XP Home and would like to take the hard drive out and place it in a desktop (Box02) with a faster processor. Does anyone have any words of advice. I thought I would give it a try and upon booting Box02 I am asked to reregister XP Home. I'm not quite sure why.

    Thanks,
    John

    I hope you mean "Activate".
The new Box02 has enough hardware changes which turn on the need to "reactivate" it.
On a NEW install there is NO requirement to "Register".

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Do you really mean reactivate? If the copy you have is an OEM copy you aren't supposed to switch to a new box. The software is tied to the hardware of the original machine. For a retail copy it is because of the magnitude of change that the activation mechanism has dectected. If it has been a while (more than six months I think) since you activated XP you should be able to do it online. Otherwise, you'll have to call MS and get the long code to activate. I don't remember exactly where but during the activation process you can get a toll free number if you don't have an Internet connection.
