Your personal firewall software and Windows XP SP2

During beta testing, there have been some issues with personal firewall software and the new and improved "on by default" Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP SP2. Should you be in a rush to upgrade? Hmmm...

I checked in with Agnitum Support concerning Outpost Firewall Pro and got this advice:

    Dear Jefferson Scher,

    Thank you for email.

Version 2.5 is compatible with security center. So, possibly it is
better to wait the release of Outpost 2.5.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

I don't know whether this applies to the free version. Hope this helps.

Last I looked their free version was very old. That is not necessarily bad except that it is version 1.0. I seldom trust a 1.0 of anything. This may force some kind of update.

I would've sworn I've seen this answer somewhere, but I'm still looking. Have you heard whether Sygate's firewall products support XP SP2 yet? I can't find a yes or no so far on their site, so I'm going back as soon as I hit the post it button.

    BigAl,
    I just saw a post in their support forum under SPF Pro (I think) that says 'not yet but soon they hope'. Not very definitive. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

Thnx, Joe, I see it now. I was looking in the Personal not the Pro. However, one of the posters says he "tested" (without explanation) and it's working, so he deems it a cosmetic thing on the part of SP2 just not recognizing the product. Still, it seems strange that after all this time and betas and so on that everyone isn't prepared. Oh well...

You're welcome. I run the free SPF at home and it is working fine. Just does not get noticed by the Security Center. So, until Sygate gets that fixed I just told the Security Center to not check it.
