Install over corrupt W2K - tips and warnings? (SP 1)

I want to install Windows XP Pro on a PC with a problematic Windows 2000, SP 4. I'm hoping that this will "correct" the system, restore dll's, etc. The problems with the current Windows 2000 are subtle and I haven't gotten any good responses to postings in the W2K Forum.
Has anyone gone through something like this? Are there any warnings or tips that people can suggest?
    Thanks in advance.

When making a major change of operating system, I for one try never to install on top of the old. Even in this case where W2K and XP are "similar" in structure, there could (would) be glitches that don't get cleaned up. I think this is especially true if you're talking about the kind of problems you've recently discussed in the W2K forum - hijackings and disk analysis (chkdsk) problems. Sorry, you'll hate me for saying it, but I'd opt for a clean install after saving important data offline somewhere.

I'm afraid I am of the same opinion. A clean re-install is much more likely to lead to peace and harmony than an upgrade.

Make that 3, a CLEAN install is always better.

    To all,
Thanks, everyone. A clean install sounds like the way to go. I appreciate all the feedback.
Since we're talking clean instll, I might just reinstall Windows 2000, for which I have the manufacturer's CD. It will save me the cost of XP, and give the same result - a functioning system. I just have to back everything up, locate all the original CD's, etc. Yuch.
