Windows Update

Being one of those who still has 56Kbps dial up access to the internet, rather than broadband, I have a question about Windows Update.
MS identify that I should move to IE6 which the web page says could involve a download of as much as 75Mb. My ISP is one of those that insists on breaking the link when I have been on line for 2 hours (".....although of course you can reconnect again immediately")
Does the MS download mechanism (whatever that is because it is not the 'standard' on which is invoked other times I download a file) support resume if the ISP breaks the connection?
If not, how can I get this (potentially) huge file on to my machine?

"If their download mechanism is restartable". Don't know what the current situation is, but when I was on dialup, downloads would resume if they were interrupted. I remember specifically making a mental note that MS was one of the few sites that would resume a download.

    Re: Windows Update

I hope you are not mis-thinking your units!

You won't actually be getting 56 kbps on your dial-up line, probably more like 44 kbps (or even lower!). That is kilo-bits per second, so your data download speed needs to be divided by somewhere between 8 and 10* to get kilo-bytes per second. This is around 5 kBps, which when you do the maths (or math!) gives you a download speed of around 18 MB per hour. So around four hours for your 75 MB of data. That's if it all goes well...

    * there is a certain amount of transmission overhead which means you need more than 8 bits per transmitted byte. 9 is a good number to pick, and 10 makes the calculations so much easier!!

PN: (Philosophical Note) - we are coming to the point where updating operating systems and office-type programs will not be practical without broadband...

    Re: Windows Update

Dave's assuming you're talking about XP and you didn't say that. You've recently posted a bit in the Win2K forum and awhile back, in WinME. Anyway, I can't find the links at MS right away quick, but can't one ask them to mail a CD for updating any of their OSs? I went looking to see if their download mechanism is re-startable and I can't find anything either. Does anyone know the answer(s)?

Edited to add: I take one question back. I found here that mailing CDs is for U. S. and Canadian customers only. Blah!

Try to use download manager - to me, GetRight is better (US $25), but you can find similar free programs on the Internet.

Such a small file... for a CD. Can you download it on a fast connection and burn it? Some IT person somewhere must owe you a favor...

    Re: Windows Update

Maybe someone can confirm this, but it wouldn't surprise me if the forthcoming XP Service Pack 2 CDs will probably include Internet Explorer 6.1...?

    Re: Windows Update

According to slashdot it comes with new versions of IE & OE. They don't mention the numbers but it's got to be at least 6.1.

    Re: Windows Update

For XP SP-2 the version on IE and OE is 6.0.2900.2180. Not 6.1 yet.

    Re: Windows Update

Sorry, I actually meant IE 6.0 SP 1! My version current version on XP Pro is IE 6.0.2800.1106 including a raft of warm fixes...!

    Re: Windows Update

No problem. To be completely correct the Help | About on IE reads 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. Help | About on OE reads 6.0.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158).

Try and say that three times quickly.

    Re: Windows Update

    HI everyone
Sorry for the delay in answering - I'd won another week at mum in law's place, a twilight zone where computers have not yet penetrated.
    To answer all.
    1.
My PC runs on Windows 2K

I didn't think it was possible to order a CD if one lives in the UK

I haven't made a mistake with my maths. It's because I know I get around 4.8Kbytes transmission that I know that downloading this potentially huge file will take me over the two hour connection time my ISP imposes on me

I have a buddy who has broadband who would download for me, but I thought the whole point of Windows Update was that it groped the system using it and downloaded the elements needed for that operating system. My buddy is on XP; can he download the update for my W2K?

I have a download accelerator, but Windows Update seems to have its own transfer mechanism. Certainly, every time I've used it it's never gone anywhere near either the basic IE downloader or my accelerator. How can I force it to use the accelerator?
Sorry - so many questions in reply to your postings!

    Re: Windows Update

Usually you can get this sort of thing from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ but Windows XP SP2 has not yet been posted there. If you go to <post#=397458>post 397458</post#> you will find a link that your buddy can follow to download it for you.

    Re: Windows Update

    Stuart,
That link is for XP SP 2,

For 2K, you need to go to Windows (Security & Updates) and have you buddy down load what you need.

Caution: this site is for ALL OS's

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
