    Capitalize on Replace (Word XP)

I'm updating a document and changing all the occurances of ABC (all uppercase) to Xyz (initial capital plus lower case) . The only issue that it inserts XYZ (uppercase) and not as requested. I cannot seem to find a check box for 'ignore case' (or similar). Any suggestions on getting it to do what I want and now what it wants?

If I set "Match Case" then it seems to do the right thing.

hmmm - I saw that and tried it but it didn't seem to work. I ended up changing ABC to XYZ (no check boxes) and then changing XYZ to Xyz (with check box as you highlighted).

Next time I have to do this, I'll try the check box again.

    Thanks ...

I notice that Find/Replace ocassionally gets off kilter & I have to close & restart Word. But not only should it work as Stuart has said, but if you check "use wildcards", then replace ABC with Xyz should work. In the latter case, both the "Match case" & "Whole words only" will be greyed out.

    Hi Phil,

Those gremlins have visited you, too? I thought it was just me.

I run into this when editing several documents. It seems the Find/Replace dialog sometimes uses settings from some previous search in another document, not those currently shown in the dialog. If you don't immediately notice that Find/Replace suddenly acts strange, this can be a real bummer.
But I haven't been able to figure out reproducible steps to demonstrate the issue.

It may be related to new problems in VBA, where the ActiveDocument will suddenly change after a Find/Replace.

    Hi Klaus:
I've even had it happen to me after I've checked & redone the Find/Replace criteria & used only one document. It seems the gremlins know where I live. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Re: Capitalize on Replace (Word XP)

One thing I was able to reproduce (with one document):
Delete any custom paragraph style and define a new custom character style.
If you then use that character style in "Replace with", Word formats the whole paragraph in the character style (as if it were a paragraph style), but doesn't properly apply the formatting of the character style.

I come across such bugs a lot in Word2002/2003, and I don't think they existed in previous versions.

Tested in Word 2000 & it works as it should. Only the word was changed to match the character style.
    Cheers,
