Norton AV and XP-SP2

Apparently Symantec is making updates available beginning August 10 for their Norton products. See this article. . Symantec is advising customers to update their AV products PRIOR to installing SP2 - not because they won't continue to work, but the new Security Centre will report them as not working correctly.

Two things:
a) it's now August 11 and the Norton site in the link earlier in this thread is still promising more info as of August 10, but it's not actually there yet.
my AV live update had me download a large (over 1M) "Norton WMI" update, and I haven't been able to find out what that is. anyone know?

The WMI is the Windows Monitoring Instrumentation. The update you just installed is the update that allows Windows to monitor the status of Symantec products.

The Windows Security Center in SP2 passively monitors the status of your anti-virus & firewall software. Prior to the latest update from Symantec it could not detect the status due to the tamper protection technology embedded in Symantec products. This would result in a status of unknown being listed in the Windows Security Center for Symantec products. This update to the WMI allows the Windows Security Center to correctly identify the status of the Symantec products.

Without the updates from Symantec your anti-virus and firewall would still be working with SP2 even though the Windows Security Center could not indentify their status.

Yes, it's actually there and you've downloaded it (WMI). And it was there on August 10 as that's when I downloaded it. I believe for these updates, you must run Live Update manually. Symantec also states that Live Update should be run a few times until it indicates that everything is up to date.
