    Can't write E-mail (XP Pro, Office 2003 (Outlook 11.5608.5606))

When I try to write an E-mail, either by replying to a message or by clicking on "New", Outlook (2003) says something like "Starting Word 2003 as your E-mail editor" and then hangs / freezes (hourglass, no action). Any suggestions?

Have you successfully used Word as your editor before?

Is Word busy doing anything else?

As a workaround, you could use the built-in Outlook editor. In earlier versions of Outlook, this was set under Tools>Options...>Mail Format, but of course your dialogs could vary.

I'm on my second go-round with this problem using Outlook2002. I don't remember how I solved it before. I think it went away on its own. I've always used Word as my Editor in Outlook: I love being able to use my Word shortcuts. At this point, if that option is checked, Word starts crashing...whether I am using it in Outlook, or on its own. As soon as I uncheck the option and go to the Outlook editor, the problem ceases. I'm working on decreasing the size of my Outlook.pst file. And I ran a defrag: the outlook.pst file is fragmented [Defrag doesn't fix it]. Scanpst.exe declares repair is optional. Seems to me the problem is not with the file, but with the way Word and Outlook interact.

But if I can cure my problems by deselecting Word as the Editor, then those aren't the issue.

Do you have Word started before Outlook? This would help sort out whether it is the "starting" of Word or the interaction between Outlook and Word that is causing your problem. If it is the "starting" of Word, it could be that other add-ins are creating a problem. Hard to say... and I don't use Office 2003 (yet).

The "elders" on the Exchange/Outlook mailing list I follow are of the opinion that "Word as Email Editor" is just asking for heartache. The Office 2003 version is the only one that even comes close to working properly.
I don't use it myself, so YMMV.

What started when didn't seem to matter. Word-in-Outlook and Word are my two main tools, and I was beginning to feel as if I had had a stroke. So I finally called Microsoft. Turns out that the PDFMaker Add-In had indeed corrupted my Normal.dot. Outlook files were not closed properly too many times, and outlook.pst was bolixed as well. Fragmented beyond all belief. Two consultations later, I had a new profile, a new outlook.pst file, a new normal.dot file and was working as before. Lots of help getting all my customized buttons and toolbars back into Word and rules, views, etc went right into the new datafile in Outlook without my doing anything. I did have some difficulty breaking the link to the old Contacts database and establishing the new. And I lost all my custom keystroke shortcuts. <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15> But all in all a light price to pay. I'm also set up to select the 3rd party COM Add-ins WHEN I THINK I NEED THEM, and not on an idiot basis at startup.

Yeah, and I ended up working with the Microsoft people in India because my IT department feels that way about Outlook in general. I've been using Word since the 80's, and I use it at a fairly high level for more than 75% of my work. It is, at this point, an extension of my brain. Using Word in Outlook lets me communicate more efficiently because I don't have to change editing styles/shortcuts. If I were doing other work or using other applications, I probably would give it up. That's not the case. And I don't think I'm alone.
