    'Unknown' revisions (word 2002 (xp?))

    Well helloooo 'dere,

I've got a user who swears up & down that she only worked on her document from her computer & not anyone elses... but her comments in a revision are marked as "Unknown". Now, my confidence in her recounting of events aside, is there any way to adjust the owner on those comments back to her? I'm sure this won't be the last time I deal with this issue... ;-]] hehehe.

Thanks so much for your help!

Have her go to Tools/Options/User Information & change her name from Unknown to whatever (not literally whatever). <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Have her save 2 copies of the document. In one, reject all changes; in the other, accept all changes. Then merge those two documents & it should indicate that all the changes are from her.
    Cheers,

Yeah - I saw that. I guess I could initially accept that in order to assign the revision you had to hack the revision table... but then again, this is coming out of Seattle... heheheh.

    Thanks again Hans!

I guess I neglected to mention - her user id is in there, at least on her workstation here - who knows what she has on her home workstation. I'm guessing that's where this all started. I'm going to try the rich-text hack.

    Thanks anyway, tho!!

My money is on the user having removed the author information herself, although she may have no idea how she did it. Take a look at the "Remove personal information" option under Tools>Options...>Security on her PC.

Thanks J! I'll take a look at that too.

Now for the next day's interesting twist: I asked the user to forward the document to me so I could try the Rich Text hack & guess what -- - All her revisions appear identified in this copy of the doc. So if the user opens it herself, she shows up as Uknown - but if I open it, she appears as herself. Kreepy!

Again, I'll double check the security issue (thanks for the graphic)...

I'll post what I find out.

    Thanks again!

Ok - the user does not have the "remove personal information" flag checked. But she did have the Macro security on High - could the macro security setting relate to whether her own ID shows on the documents?

Additionally, I noticed on her installation of Office - she's only running Office2000 (most of our workstations are OfficeXP Small Biz or Pro). So could going between versions confuse her installation of Word?

    ...still curious <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

"High" macro security should not affect the ability to view the authors of tracked changes. (I didn't confirm it myself, but there's really no connection.)

If she created the document herself in Word 2000, I can't imagine there's an incompatibility... maybe if the template was created in Word 2002?? Very strange.

I check this frequently, I always have Macro security set to high and use Track Changes every day. There is no interaction that I have ever noticed.

Well the template very well could have been from Word2002 since most other workstations have that installed. I'll see if I can upgrade her - maybe that will solve the problem.

Thanks again for all your help on this mysterious issue <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15> I'll post my findings after the upgrade.
