MS Security Update CD February '04

Requested and received MS Windows Security Update CD (2/04) last week. Now with all the news about SP2 coming out soon, should I be installing the CD? Or should I wait for the big update. Or are the two not at all connected?

OS is Windows XP, SP1 (I think!)

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

No, The SP2 will include this data.
Also if you have installed all critical updates you already have this data installed.

The CD was targeted mainly for those on earlier Windows versions.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Linda,
The CD will bring you up to date as of October 2003. Certainly wouldn't hurt to run it first. Then install the SP2, which by the way is available now from a few sites.
SP 2 is also a huge update to the OS, as well as security changes. see <post#=396807>post 396807</post#>

    Dave and Bob,

Thanks for quick and helpful replies. Sounds as if my error was in not checking here before I ordered the CD! I've been conscientious about installing updates as they appear, so think I'll wait on this update and go for the SP2.

Do you know if it will be available via CD (at no cost as the Feb. 04 one was) as I am always leery of downloading such massive files?

    Thanks again.

It will be available at no cost (including free S&H) on CD. I saw a link to the order page but now can't find it.

Hope this helps, and you did NO harm in ordering the CD, it could come in handy if some else needs any of the releases.

Oh. Well, the only reason is nervousness about big downloads. Is this dumb? If so, I will quite happily follow your advice and download the SP (but please reassure me again). Sorry, but I really am a bit tech-phobic, I guess.

I am so sorry, I was not clear: why would you wait to install from the CD you already have. I certainly can understand why you would wait to install SP2. I'm waiting!!

    Bob,

Okay, now I'm clear how to do it, but unsure whether to proceed as my Lounge advisors are telling me both to wait and to go ahead! And I am NOT technically expert for sure. Any way to clarify which is best to do at this time: wait or download?

(Edited by jscher2000 on 14-Aug-04 13:20. My post was very unclear!!)
I don't understand why you would wait. The update should be relatively painless, and you really do not want to be vulnerable to very, very serious old security problems for the month that it might take to get another CD. What am I missing here? I guess I'm not sure what is the difference between the CD and the updates you have been installing one-by-one...

Clarification: I was referring to the update from the February 2004 CD, not the new SP2 download!

Depends on how cautious you want to be about applying the patch. If you read the comments in the rest of that thread, you'll see that all ( I think ) of the posters who have gone on and applied the patch report ( myself included ) that it went over fine and didn't have problems. I thought I had one but it wasn't really a problem.
I do think that MS did a LOT of beta testing on this SP to make sure that it would be OK. So my vote is to go ahead.
