Automatically Resize to Fit Contents (2002/xp)

Someone told me that they thought there was an Automatically Resize to Fit Contents option in excel in that when I type in a cell and the text is longer then the column width, Excel will automatically widen the column. Sort of like an automatic autofit selectioncommand. I know MS Word has the option but we can't find it in Excel if it does exist.

Is there such an option. Thank you,
    Steve

Select the cells you want to apply this to.
Select Format | Cells... or press Ctrl+1.
    Activate the second tab
    Click the AutoFit check box.
    Click OK.

Thanks Hans, however, my second tab (alignment tab) doesn't have an autofit check box. It only has wrap text, shrink to fit and merge cellls.
Am I missing an option. See attached.

    Thank you,
    Steve

Sorry, I was translating back into English, and clearly incorrectly.

If you tick "Wrap text", Excel will automatically size the height of the row to accomodate the cell contents. The width of the column will not change.
If you tick "Shrink to fit" ("Wrap text" must be off), the size of the cell will be fixed, but Excel will use a smaller font if necessary to accomodate the cell contents.

    Try this:
Format - column - autofit selection

Re: Automatically Resize to Fit Contents (2002/xp)

Thanks guys. I assume from this that there is no true "auto" option (with the exception of possibly writing a macro) that will automatically widen the columns once I enter information into a cell, like the wrap text option does for rows.

It has to be done manually after I type by either double clicking a column divider or by using the Format - column - autofit selection, which is the same as double clicking.

    Thanks again,
    Steve

    Hi,
Here is a sample worksheet that uses the Sheet Change event to autofit columns based on changes in cells!
