    Group templates don't show

I have developed a fairly extensive system of templates, using multiple directories to keep them organized. As I attempt to share these templates within the office using the

    Go into Word.

Go to Tools, Options, File Locations, and enter the proper pathway for Workgroup Templates. This has to be done on every machine.

That's been done on every machine (otherwise they couldn't see the right directory or subdirectory).

The problem is not that they can't see the group template directory/sub-directories. The problem is that when they open the subdirectories they only see one file, instead of all of the files actually in the sub-directory.

    Hi Bob,

Can they see the templates if they navigate to them via File/Open?

Also, what version/SR of Word are you using?

    Re: Group templates don't show

File|Open gets them all of the files, including those not shown by File|New.

The problem is occurring with both Word97 and Word2000. In fact, back when we thought this

was just my secretary having the problem, she talked me into upgrading her Office software

from 97 to 2000, and when that didn't fix the problem she talked me into upgrading her

Windows version from 98SE to ME. That also failed to solve the problem.

The problem machines running Word97 have SR-2 installed.

No service packs have been installed on any of the Word2000 machines (including those

running on NT or Win2K, where the problem does not appear).

    HI Bob,

What type of network are you running?

Its a mixed network, both Novell 3.2 and NT4. The original network was Novell, and the Novell server is where all of the documents and templates reside. The NT4 side of things was added later, and is currently only for Exchange/Outlook.

It's been more than 10 years since I've come within touching distance of a Novell network so take what I say with a big sack of salt. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I suspect that this has to do with network permissions as interpreted by NT and Novell. See what happens if you log onto the network from one of the machines as a user with administrator permissions on the network. NT, at least, has a separate folder permission for allowing someone to see the names of files (as compared to being able to open, save, read, edit, or even delete files).

You may have to upgrade the permissions of your users on both of your network servers. Don't know if this is the problem but it sounds like it. You might want to check in the NT forum.

    Re: Group templates don't show

Already tried logging in on problem machines as different users, including those with full admin rights. It turns out that the problem is machine specific, and the user makes no difference. Similarly, a user having problems at their primary machine can log in at a machine not exhibiting problems, and have no problems there. Unfortunately, everyone can't use the same machines at once.

    Thanks...Bob

    Re: Group templates don't show

I remember having a similar problem with our Netware 4.11 access. In fact what happened was users could not save to their home directories, but this may help.

It all pivots on the Universal Naming Convention, UNC.

You need to edit the Registry, so the usual rider of backing it up before starting applies.

    1. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice8.0WordOpt ions
    2. Double-click the Options key.

If an entry exists in the right pane named DontUseUNC, skip to step 5.

NOTE: Use steps 3 through 4 only when you are adding the DontUseUNC option to the registry.
    3. With the Options key selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value. This inserts a new option named New Value #1.
    4. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, type DontUseUNC, and then press ENTER.

    5. With DontUseUNC selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
In the Value Data box, type 1.

This setting disables the use of UNC and forces Word to use a logical drive letter.

NOTE: Setting Value Data to 0 or deleting the DontUseUNC key resets Word to the default and allows it to resolve file locations using UNC

    Re: Group templates don't show

Good thought, but it didn't make any difference.

Thinking about it in hindsight, though, the naming convention (UNC or drive letter) probably wouldn't make a difference anyway, since these users can see the sub-directories, and one file within the sub-directories, they just can't see all of them. If the naming convention had been the cause, wouldn't the result be an all or nothing type of thing? Oh, well..., on we go.

    Thanks...Bob

    Re: Group templates don't show

I don't see how it can be rights related - even when I log in with full admin rights the problem still occurs on a problem machine.

To push this thing a bit further, I set up a testbed machine with a new HD, a new scratch install of WinME, and no software installed except Office 2000 and Norton AntiVirus 2001. The problem showed up immediately. I'm running out of things to try, o I'd appreciate any thoughts at all.

    Thanks...Bob

First reaction would be it's a permissions thing and/or someone has changed the access/permission rights. Have a look also under Tools, Options and File Locations to make sure there's no conflict between User Templates location, startup etc. although it sounds as though you would no doubt have checked that.

Are there any spaces in the file names in question?
