    Alternative Browsers?

    Hello,

For Windows XP based computers, I wonder if you have tried browsers other than Microsoft Internet Explorer which you can recommend.

So they should be fast, easy to setup and have a nice GUI.

    Cheers,

    Bob.

Mozilla Firefox fits that description. You'll probably need to download a few 'extensions' to get all the features you want, but they are easy-peasy to download and install themselves.
You will find a lot of Loungers using it now, so plenty of support and advice here!

I'm surprised you didn't search the statistics page here in The Lounge to see how many browsers are listed! In addition to the obvious heavy use of IE, what the guys are saying about either the "production" version of Mozilla or it's newest Firefox version, you'll see the next most frequently mentioned browser is Opera which I can't comment about. There are a couple of others if you look through this forum or the software forum, but they don't show up in the statistics list.

    Re: Alternative Browsers?

I've posted some impressions of Firefox further down the board. I'm soaking in it right now.

Setup and migration is mostly automatic, but some of my cookies didn't come across, I'm not sure why. For passwords I've forgotten I have to sneak those in manually. Also, some sites use IE-only code, so for those you still need to fire up IE. I've also made some comments on the security model. Basically, read all my posts on this board for the past month. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I've been using Opera for a couple of years and am very impressed with it. There is a great support community and the company seems pretty reponsive to any concerns. I would certainly recommend giving it a whirl!

    Re: Alternative Browsers?

I love FireFox. Tried Mozilla several years ago, wasn't too impressed. But they sure have improved.
You're right many Investments and Bank institutions "Must use IE for security reasons", so I keep it for that specifically. I have run into several "credit card"-"buy" sites that require IE, too.
My email is handled by Incredimail, for the past four years - Great Program for the creative sole.

There's one program that I find invaluable ROBOFORM.
I no longer use any other password program or element. They're all turned OFF. This keeps all my stuff completely safe and home where it belongs.
I even had a knowledgable freind try to break into it. He gave up after a week.

    Have a great week.

For a fairly comprehensive list of alternative browsers see download.com. The ones that pop-up more often include:

    Firefox
    Mozilla
    Netscape
    Opera
    K-Meleon
    Amaya
    Slim Browser
    Crazy Browser

    Internet Explorer based browsers
    Avant Browser

Plus a couple for the Mac users
    Safari
    Camino

    Bob:
Although I know use Firefox, you might want to give Avant Browser (mentioned in Tony's post above) a try. It has wonderful features & a lot of keyboard shortcuts. The only reason I use Firefox instead is because it uses too many resources for my machine (Win 98SE). Otherwise, I'd always use it.

    Re: Alternative Browsers?

Ayup, e.g., Bank of America Homelink supports only Netscape 6.2 and later, IE 5 and later, and some AOL browser.
I expect that they are checking out Mozilla/Firefox, but won't commit yet.
